Joy Faye Wood passed away on September 17, 2017, at the age of 94. She was born on March 25, 1923, to the late Earl and Nellie Stockard.
Joy was raised in the Bethel community near Athens, Texas, and went on to marry Henry Eugene (Piney) Wood. A member of the “Greatest Generation” that overcame the struggles of the Great Depression and helped win World War II, she worked in an aircraft factory for the P-51 fighter plane while Piney was away in Europe in the Normandy invasion and fighting in France. Following the war, she and Piney welcomed two children, Dan and Sue, who now live in College Station and Humble, respectively. Joy and Piney settled in Pasadena, Texas, where she served her family as a housewife until returning to school in the late 1960’s. She graduated from LVN school and retired from nursing after 20 years. Joy had a true passion for gardening and grandchildren, and her retired years were filled with both. She was a true nurturer who was so very proud of her family and always made sure they knew just how proud she was. She was a longtime member of Central Baptist Church in Pasadena until she relocated to College Station in recent years. Joy loved the Lord and always enjoyed studying her Bible.
She was preceded in death by her beloved Piney, parents Nellie and Earl, brothers, George and Carrol “Pete” Stockard and sister, Addie Weeze Stockard. Survivors include her son, Dan Wood, and wife, Pat; daughter, Sue Stuber, and husband, Charles; grandchildren, Dana Wood Teaford, Nathan Wood, Lori Stuber Freshour and Lendi Stuber; 9 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter due to arrive in October.
The family sincerely thanks the wonderful caregivers and staff at the Isle at Watercrest, Bryan, Texas for their loving care of our Nonnie in recent years.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, September 20, 2017 at Autrys Carroll-lehr Funeral Home. Graveside services will be Thursday, September 21, 2017 at Oaklawn Memorial Park.
