Obituary: James Leon Johnson

James JohnsonServices for James Leon Johnson, 90 of Athens are scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2015 at Carroll-Lehr Funeral Chapel with Rev. David Ellis and Rev.
Mike Drinkard officiating. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Park.

Mr. Johnson passed away Aug. 29, 2015 in Athens.

He was born April 5, 1925 in Anderson County to Harvey Carl and Fannie May Bailey Johnson. Leon was a United States Navy Veteran. He served a 30-year tenure as chief of Athens Fire Department. He had been a Mason over 60 years. Leon had a strong voice and loved singing. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church. Leon loved gardening, making bird houses, crafting, woodworking and carpentry and cooking his famous coriander cake and homemade stew and cornbread.

He is preceded in death by his wife Margaret, parents, sisters Francis Johnson, Nellie Jo Johnson, brothers Earnest Chatman Johnson, H. C. Johnson, Jr. and Louis Bailey Johnson.

Survivors include his nieces Barbara McAree, Sandra Carole Park, Lori Price and a host of cousins.

Pallbearers will be Phil Stephenson, Richard Burgess, Zach Solis, Nacho Solis, Caleb Solis. Honorary pallbearers will be the Masons and Athens Fire Department.

Visitation for family and friends will be 5-7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
