Funeral services for Eloise Powell, 89, formerly of Athens, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, March 21, 2014 at the Hannigan Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Athens, Texas with Rev. Jim Edwards officiating. Interment will follow at Fincastle Cemetery near Poynor.
Eloise Powell, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, slipped away peacefully on March 17, 2014 at her home in Tyler.
She was born April 6, 1924 in Fincastle, Texas to B.W. and Mattie Campbell-Wood.
Eloise was a faithful Christian who loved and trusted her Lord and Savior.
“Granny,” as she was known by many, was always a very generous, kind-hearted soul, never meeting a stranger and always quick with a sweet smile. She captured your heart and friendship at “Hello.” Her hobbies included cooking, gardening, cross stitching and canning fresh vegetables. She will be truly missed by all that knew her.
In addition to her parents, Eloise was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Woodrow “Red” Powell, granddaughter, Shena Denise Edwards, three sisters, Lorena Jacobs, Rosa Lee Chapman, Elizabeth Jozell McGuire, three brothers, Alvin Wood, William Bentley Wood, Melvin Junior Wood and four nephews.
She is survived by her daughter, Faye Powell-Harris of Tyler, two grandsons, Gaylon Edwards of Austin, and Tracy Edwards and wife Sherri of Tyler, three great grandchildren, Maegen Edwards of New Orleans, LA, Eli and Katie Edwards of Tyler, one brother, Calvin Preston Wood, of Malakoff. She was loved and cherished by her extended family, nieces, nephews and dear friends.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the caregivers of Legacy Hospice of Tyler for all their devoted and tireless care for this special lady.
Attending pallbearers will be Brian Hall, T.J. Martin, Jeff Spivey, Phillip Surls, Bob Canada, and J.P. Cotton.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 20, 2014 from 5-7 p.m. at the Hannigan Smith Funeral Home, 842 S.E. Loop 7, Athens,TX 75752.
