Obituary: Dr. Ford Dixon

Dixon, FordMemorial services for Dr. Ford Dixon, Jr., 80, of Athens will be held on Saturday, August 20, 2016 at 10 a.m. at the Hannigan Smith Funeral Home of Athens.

Dr. Dixon passed away on Friday, August 05, 2016 in Athens, Texas.

Ford was born on June 10, 1936 in Cherokee County, TX, son of Ford Dixon, Sr. and Kathleen Trammell Dixon. He married the love of his life, Mary Jeannine Stanford on December 31, 1962 in Austin, TX. A born educator and lecturer, Ford’s career as a teacher lasted 38 years. He was an adjunct professor at TCU, taught at Tarrant County Community College, was department head at Fort Worth Country Day for 27 years, taught at The Woodlands High School and finally at Montgomery High School until his retirement in 2006.

Ford served in the United States Army as a medic during the Korean War. He was an avid golf player, a member of ACC, and was referred to by many as “Doc.” He also loved to read, write and was quite a storyteller. Ford enjoyed yard work, gardening, and watching football. He was a devoted family man, who was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

He is preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Gene Crawford, Bobbie Adair, and Dot Burgoon.

Ford is survived by his wife Mary Dixon of Athens; children, Ford Dixon III of Austin, Joseph T. Dixon and wife Stephanie of Manhattan Beach, CA, and Bobbie Dixon Fain of Athens; grandchildren, Hunter Fain, Skylar Fain, and Lexi Dixon; nephew Joe Crawford, who was more like a brother, and his wife Jinny; and numerous other nieces, nephews, grand nieces, and grand nephews, who lovingly called him “Guncle.”
