The Henderson County Master Gardener’s annual plant sale will be held on April 28, 2018, from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Henderson County Senior Citizen’s Center, 3356 State Hwy 31 E, Athens (next to the rodeo arena).
Somewhere in a greenhouse, there are tiny plants pushing up from seeds in small pots. Once they get big enough, they will be potted up into larger pots until their roots are established and they are strong enough to survive outdoors. Other mature plants have sacrificed a piece of themselves, maybe a leaf, a stem, or some of their roots, and that piece is being cared for in a way that will ensure that it will become a mature plant itself and be able to survive on its own.
Master Gardeners know how to perpetuate plant species and love to share this expertise with the public, by sharing the seeds or leaves or other parts of some of our own plants. We begin the process, called propagation, in the fall and winter, so that these plants will be strong enough for our plant sale in the spring. Then the public can come and buy some of these plants to take home and plant themselves. Ah, the circle of life!
Not only will everyone who comes to our plant sale have the chance to purchase many native and naturalized plants that are easy to grow and maintain, but there will also be a large variety of annuals and perennials, along with herbs, indoor plants, shrubs and even trees! And, new this year, there will be an art corner where unique hand painted pots and bird/bat houses will be available for sale. There will be plenty of Master Gardeners on hand to answer questions and share their knowledge about the plants.
Come and join in the fun and take home a piece (or several pieces) of nature, along with a pot or a birdhouse that can add a unique perspective to your landscape. This sale is one of our fundraising events for the year and helps us to fulfill our mission: to provide the members of our community with the relevant research-based information they need for successful, sustainable, and healthy gardening.
