A Mabank High School student was found to be in possession of a handgun at school Wednesday morning, according to Superintendent Dr. Russell Marshall.
Marshall said the student had the gun in his backpack. The gun was reported by another student about 9:30 a.m. and Mabank ISD police were able to secure the gun and take the student into custody.
Marshall was unsure of the type of handgun when we spoke.
Marshall said nobody was ever threatened and the student apparently did not bring the gun on campus to do any harm.
“Obviously this is extremely serious and we handled it that way,” Marshall said, “but it was an isolated incident.”
The student now faces possible criminal and school district discipline. Marshall said it was too early to tell what would happen to the student.
“What I am proud of is that everyone acted quickly and professionally,” Marshall said. “We released the information on our alert system and are sending a letter home to parents to get the facts out.”
School continued as normal at MISD Wednesday.
