The second-ranked Trinity Valley Community College Lady Cardinals made up for a late start to the season in a big way this past weekend at the Clarendon Classic.
The Lady Cardinals scored a pair of convincing wins, racing away with a 133-24 blowout of Southwest Texas in their opener Friday and then Saturday routing host Clarendon to the tune of 96-61.
Second-year coach Gerald Ewing’s squad is scheduled to carry its 2-0 mark into the annual WNIT Tournament later this week at Midland College. The Lady Cardinals are scheduled to face Garden City (Kan.) at 1 p.m. Thursday in the opening round.
Scoring 40 points in the opening quarter, the Lady Cardinals made short work of Southwest Texas. They led 44-8 at halftime.
Nine players scored in double figures, led by Leah Mathis with 21. Malayasia McHenry added 20, followed by Naomi Davenport with 17, Maya Singleton, Khady Toure and Dajhae Mullins with 12 each and Christalah Lyons, Rainey Kuykendall and Troy Swain with 10 each.
Against Clarendon, the Lady Cardinals, who 24-20 after one quarter and 51-37 at the half, blew the game open with a 24-8 scoring edge in the third quarter.
Singleton paced the scoring with 19 points.
Also scoring in double figures were Lyons with 18, Kuykendall 17, McHenry 11 and Davenport and Mathis 10 each.
