Hernandez headed to state in Congressional Debate

Debate

Athens High School students, from left, True Head, Michael Pulver, and Matthew Hernandez were in UIL District competition last week for Congressional Debate. Hernandez took second place and qualified for state. Pulver placed fifth and received the top presiding officer honor, and Head placed eighth. This event is in its third year as a pilot event for the University Interscholastic League, and AHS has qualified a student to state all three years. Almost 40 students competed in the class 4A division. Congressional debate is a mock legislative competition in which students draft bills and resolutions, which are debated and voted on.
