CASA of Trinity Valley is inviting area horseback riders to saddle up in support of abused and neglected children.
CASA, which stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates, is hosting its first Hearts on Horseback Charity Trail Ride at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at Trace Trails, 8543 County Road 3914 in Athens. Attendees are invited to bring their horses and stay the weekend or attend for the day, have lunch, play games, and bid in a silent auction featuring gift baskets, sports tickets, hotel gift certificates and more.
CASA recruits, screens and trains volunteers to speak in court for the best interests of children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect.
“These children find themselves thrust into the foster care system through no fault of their own,” executive director Emily Heglund said. “Our volunteers are fierce advocates for them, ensuring they get the services they need while in care and that they find safe, permanent homes as quickly as possible.”
Last year, CASA volunteers advocated for 791 children in Henderson, Anderson and Cherokee counties. When a volunteer is appointed to a case by a county or district judge, the volunteer will begin visiting regularly with the child or children involved.
CASA volunteers also talk to others involved in the children’s lives: extended family members, teachers, counselors, caseworkers and more. They gather information, then make recommendations to the courts on the children’s best interests.
Those interested in participating in the Hearts on Horseback Charity Trail Ride are invited to register online at www.casaoftv.org. Click on Events. The cost is $40 per rider for those who register before Oct. 7 and $50 per rider the day of the event. Attendees must show proof of a negative Coggins test.
Those interested in potentially being a volunteer are invited to fill out an application, also online. For more information, contact Ingrid Harris, office and events manager, at (903) 675-7070.
