Hello again! Please mark your calendars for the special events coming. Some of these are for our auxiliary members, but everyone is invited to the sales!
Sept. 11 – Our first ever $1 Bake Sale. Come get good homemade snacks for your bunch at work or home! From 7 a.m. until all is gone.
Tuesday the 22nd – Auxiliary Party at the Arboretum, from 4 to 7.
Thursday and Friday, the 24th and 25th – Book Fair – lots of books and educational toys and some electronics. 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, 8 to 3 Friday.
Friday, October 2 – TAHV District 10 meeting at the First United Methodist Church here in Athens. (note to members—if you work, you don’t have to pay!) Others pay only $12.50.
Wednesday, October 7 – HIPAA training at the regular meeting. Required of all auxiliary members! If you can’t make the meeting, you must go to Medical Records to get the training.
Thursday and Friday, October 8-9, the long-awaited Linen Sale! Great sheets, etc., at great prices. I’m mentioning it now because next month’s column will be too late!
Wednesday, October 21- Circle of Service meeting at ETMC Tyler for all officers and leaders.
The Gift Shop has several items on sale for 30 percent off. These include decorative rain gauges, pretty wind chimes, and children’s art kits. And of course there are always beautiful clothes available. As I’ve said before, clothes are the biggest seller, so if you see something you like, better grab it! The inventory changes constantly. Also, October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and the shop has many unique items relating to that.
Summer is a fairly slow time for the auxiliary, with members going on vacation, etc. So I have little news, except for a few more tidbits about our volunteers:
Allie Gravelle worked for ETMC Medical Records for years, but when she retired, she joined the auxiliary. This surprising lady is working on her Bucket List. Many of us have a Bucket List, even though it may not be written down. But this lady is doing it! Her next adventure is to take a hot air balloon ride, scheduled soon. She has already 1) been to both Disney parks; 2) ziplined; 3) taken three cruises; 4) and ridden in a helicopter. Remaining on her list are sky diving and parasailing!
Leola Gabbert taught handicapped children for 28 years in Kansas before moving to Texas; she credits the auxiliary for saving her life after her husband passed away; as an aside, her daughter-in-law Denise Gabbert was Director of Surgery for several years before leaving for private employment; Lynn Coach also worked with handicapped children at Cayuga and West Athens schools. She has a special affinity with these children, since she had a mentally challenged sister and could not have made it without the support of family and friends. (Personal note: I remember admiring Lynn in high school, since she refused to get her ears pierced because her sister liked to sit in her lap and pull on her ear lobes.)
Connie Masterson was a candidate in the Miss America pageant as the representative from California. In her early life she was a model, and as an adult she enjoyed traveling, hunting, and camping.
All of us “old people” have lots of stories to tell, if someone would just listen!
