The winner of the Sarah Maples Christopher Columbus essay is Rukaiya Akhtar. Her parents are Zohara and Mohammed Khanam. Her teacher is Russell Pharmakis from Mabank High School. The theme of the essay was to imagine that you have been chosen to join the Christopher Columbus voyage. What do you hope to gain from this experience? Her answer was: “So many things could happen on this voyage. So many things could go wrong but I believe deep down in my heart that all will go well. I hope to gain many things from this experience, things for myself and my family. I hope to see new sights along the way, to make my new home, to have things I’ve never had before like land and money, to just live a life where I can do what I want, follow my own religion, make my own decisions. Going on this journey is one of the most important decisions that I have made in my lifetime and I hope and pray that it is the right one.” Sarah Maples gave Rukaiya a medal and certificate and she received a gift certificate from Walmart for all her good work. We hope she continues her studies and know she will do well. Pictured are Carole Ruska, Mohammed Kahanam, Rukaiya Akhtar, Zohara Khanam, and teacher Russell Pharmakis.
