Clover Connection: Robotics team rocks contest

robotics contest 1

By Kate Pittack/Extension 4-H Agent

We had something pretty neat take place here in Henderson County a couple of weeks ago. Approximately two teams of youth took part in our first ever 4-H robotics contest. We started meeting as group last fall on a monthly basis to work our way up to the contest.

Robotics is a fairly “new” 4-H project and we had about 30 youth jump in and attend over the course of our meetings. Our first place team who completed the most challenges was made up of Ro Marholz, Dillon Scott and Joshua Jones. Taking second place was the team of Colton Hemphill, Bryce Parish, Luke Beeler and Nathan Lundmark. Our teen advisor for the group was Justin Jones. Congratulations go out to all of the participants for their hard work.

There is also a steady stream of 4-H activity going on up here on the 3rd floor of the courthouse even though the livestock show is over and school is out. By the time you read this, we’ll have youth participating in State 4-H Roundup in College Station. We are excited to see how they will stack up against their competition.

June 13-15 brings the Regional 4-H Horse Show to Fair Park here in Athens. There will be exhibitors coming from all over East Texas. The 21st will be our state fair goat and lamb and major steer and heifer validations. If you’ve got any questions on animal validations please be sure to contact me. They can get a little confusing!

Wrapping up the month of June will be county 4-H award interviews, some club manager training and Jason Silvey will be making the trek all the way up to Grand Island, Nebraska to participate in the National 4-H Shooting Sports Contest as part of “Team Texas”. Since Grand Island is somewhat close to where I grew up, I know exactly how long that trip takes!
