National Jr Honor Society thrives at AMS

Let’s be honest. It’s not easy to get middle school kids to voluntarily spend half a Saturday in a team-building exercise on campus. But that’s exactly what 55 Athens Middle School students did at the end of August. Such is the strength of the National Junior Honor Society in its second year at AMS.

“These are kids trying to come together and impact the culture of their school in a positive way,” said Maureen Bogowitz, NJHS sponsor and academic dean at AMS.

The premise of the half-day camp was to focus on what Bogowitz calls “lollipop moments” — a term from a story by author Drew Dudley, in which he describes giving a stranger a lollipop in a humorous exchange that, he learned years later, ended up fundamentally making that person’s life better.

Sheriff’s Office adds drone, FAA licensed pilot

Tyler District A.M.E. churches celebrate

This weekend for the Tyler District of the A. M. E. Church was filled with celebrations. The Tyler District of the A. M. E. Church consist of 30 churches across Texas; which includes Athens, Larue/Moore Station, and Malakoff.

The first celebration was on Saturday, August 25th; at Ebenezer A. M. E. Church in Tyler, Tx., for the Anniversary of Presiding Elder Rev. Mittie C. Muse, Sr. and First Lady Sis. Mavis Muse.

Athens Masonic Lodge blood drive exceeds goal

Athens Masonic Lodge #165 hosted Carter BloodCare for a blood drive at Brookshire’s on Saturday, August 18, 2018. The goal for the blood drive was 30 units. The Lodge has had this same goal for 4 years, and the most units ever collected was previously 28 units. That changed this past Saturday, when 31 units were donated.

Type 2 Diabetes classes coming to Chandler

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service of Henderson County and CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic – Chandler have partnered up to offer a comprehensive diabetes education series called, Do Well Be Well with Diabetes. The five-session series will provide participants with the latest information on managing blood sugar. Do Well Be Well with Diabetes was designed by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension specialists to target patients who have recently been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, have had diabetes for many years, or for the spouses and caregivers of loved ones with diabetes. The five classes provide a foundation of knowledge about diabetes and empowers individuals to manage the disease. Each lesson will be presented by local health care professionals with expertise in the subject area.
