Thompson said the rally’s trademark STOP sign stands for Solution To Overall Peace and that the answer is solidarity.
“If we come together in solidarity, unified together as one for peace, we can push out the negative elements that we see,” she said at the rally following the parade. “But we all have to come together for the same cause; to want to stop and make things work for the betterment of our world.” Continue reading “MLK Day Parade, Solidarity Rally in Athens”
The first week of the new Texas Legislative session isn’t even over yet and new State Rep. Dr. Stuart Spitzer has drawn criticism from at least one member of the Henderson County Republican Party.
At issue is Spitzer’s vote for State Rep. Scott Turner for Speaker of the House over sitting Speaker Joe Strauss. Strauss won the vote 127-19.
Below is a letter submitted to us from Republican Party Secretary/Treasurer Sharon S. Wright. We also asked for, and received, a response from Spitzer.
Sharon S. Wright’s Letter
Almost one year ago, the people of Henderson and Kaufman Counties elected Stuart Spitzer over Lance Gooden as our new state representative by the narrowest of margins. In November, Dr. Spitzer told the Cedar Creek Lake Chamber that he would “continue with what Mr. Gooden has done so well.” But as soon as he was sworn into office, he turned his back on us and cast his very first vote against the Speaker of the House in favor of a second-term challenger who lost embarrassingly with only 19 votes out of 150. How is Dr. Spitzer going to continue Mr. Gooden’s good work if he alienates himself from the Speaker and 85% of his colleagues? Time will tell if he is able to accomplish anything for our district or advance any of the conservative agenda, but on first blush it appears Stuart Spitzer has already waved the white flag on Day 1. I hope the voters are paying attention. Sharon S. Wright Secretary/Treasurer Henderson County Republican Party
State Rep. Dr. Stuart Spitzer’s Answer
I am honored to be the elected and now sworn in representative of Henderson and Kaufman Counties. I raised my right hand and put my left hand on the Bible and swore to uphold the laws of The United States and Texas with my wife and children by my side. The first and only vote of the first day is to elect the Speaker of the House. I lost that vote but I followed the will of the people who sent me. It may not have been the politically correct vote but sometimes the right vote is tough politically. The Kaufman County GOP passed a resolution for me to vote the way I did and the Henderson County GOP was silent. All the calls, phone calls and emails I received (both pre and post-election) from Henderson County voters were supportive of my vote. I appreciate all the input. If you would like to email me please send to [email protected]. Stuart Spitzer MD State Representative HD 4
