Henderson County Master Gardener Association (HCMGA) will host Lydia Holley, Master Gardener and Landscape Design Steward, on Tuesday, October 16, 5:30 p.m., Clint W. Murchison Memorial Library, 121 S. Prairieville, Athens. Holley will present “Secrets to a Beautiful Winter Landscape”. This presentation is a part of HCMGA’s “Learn at the Library” series and is free and open to the public.

‘Do Well Be Well With Diabetes’ classes scheduled

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service of Henderson County and the bestvpn East Texas-Athens have partnered to offer a comprehensive diabetes education series called, “Do Well Be Well with Diabetes.” The five-session series will provide participants with the latest  info on managing blood glucose.

Do Well Be Well with Diabetes was designed to help patients who have recently been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, have had diabetes for many years, or for the spouses and caregivers of loved ones with diabetes. Nine lessons are taught over a period of five classes and teach individuals about diabetes and how to manage the disease. Each lesson will be presented by local health care professionals with expertise in the subject area. In addition to learning diabetes self-care with natural supplements like blood boost formula and management techniques, classes will include delicious diabetes friendly recipe demonstrations and tastings. Road Buzz: TxDOT Update for Week of Oct. 8

TxDOT (Athens) Maintenance plans to conduct base repairs on SH 31E in Brownsboro. A second crew will perform edge work on Loop 7. Expect lane closures with flaggers providing traffic control at both locations.

Henderson County construction projects updates:

SH 31 Overlay Project

  • Limits: From FM 3204 east to 0.5 miles west of FM 315 in Chandler
  • Contractor: Big Creek Construction
  • Cost: $2.7 million
  • Anticipated Completion Date: Fall 2018

Ongoing work includes backfilling the pavement edges, working on guard fence, and preparing for surface hot mix. Expect daily lane closures. Watch for construction traffic exiting and merging throughout the project limits. The project consists of base repairs, mill and inlay, seal coat, surface hot mix, guardrail upgrades, and the installation of signs and pavement markings.

Obituary: Raymond Lopez Ysaga Sr.

Raymond Lopez Ysasaga Sr. of Malakoff, TX was born December 26, 1934 to Amor Ybarra Ysasaga and Felicita Lopez in Cameron, TX. He went home to be with the Lord September 29, 2018.

Mr. Ysasaga served as peace officer retiring from the Dallas Police Department. He was a member of Cross Roads Baptist Church and the Cattleman’s Association.

He is preceded in death by his wife Mildred J. Ysasaga, sone Jessie Ysasaga, brother Joe Ysasaga, and sister Virginia Ysasaga.

Raymond is survived by his son Raymond Ysasaga Jr., brothers Julio,
Amos, Jesse, Johnny, sisters Rosie, Janie, Betsy, Amanda, and Christina. His legacy continues to live on in his ten grandchildren and eight grandchildren.

Visitation for Mr. Ysasaga will be Friday October 5 from 6-8 PM at Huckabee-Tomlinson Funeral Home, Malakoff, Texas.

Service will be Saturday October 6 at 9:30 AM at First Baptist Church, Cross Roads with Bro. Frank Upchurch officiating. Pallbearers will be Christopher Ysasaga, Michael Ysasaga, Raymond Ysasaga III, Antonio Robledo, Carlos Robledo, and Chris Gafford.

Interment will be in Post Oak Cemetery.
