Oak Wood Place Senior Living celebrated Veterans Day by honoring 32 veterans and 28 surviving spouses of veterans. All veterans were honored with a certificate of appreciation for service and received a commemorative service pin from IntegraCare. (Courtesy photo)

TxDOT update for the Week of Nov. 9

txdotCrews plan to overlay patches on FM 316 as well as conduct base repairs on FM 2709. Expect lane closures with flaggers providing traffic control.

Henderson County construction projects updates:

SH 31 Repair Project

  • Limits: .09 miles west of FM 317 eastward to .34 miles west of FM 773
  • Contractor: Big Creek Construction, Ltd., of Hewitt
  • Cost: $3.6 million

Work to place a new overlay on this part of SH 31 should be finished later this month. The contractor is currently milling the existing surface for replacement. Expect lane closures for the duration of the project.

Malakoff Elementary Blue Ribbon celebration

On Thursday, Malakoff Elementary School celebrated being named a Blue Ribbon Campus by the U.S. Department of Education. MES was one of only 25 schools in the state (332 nationally) to earn the recognition.

Founded in 1982, Blue Ribbon Schools is a U.S. Department of Education program that recognizes public and private elementary, middle and high schools where students perform at very high levels.

The celebration featured county, state and federal dignitaries and was sponsored by First State Bank of Malakoff, Mentoring Minds and Horace Mann Insurance.

Pioneer Days to start with a parade

This year’s Brownsboro Pioneer Days will kick off with a hometown parade. The fun will begin at 9 a.m. at the Brownsboro City Park and end at the Brownsboro High School parking lot. The family friendly event and festive fun activities is all a part of the Brownsboro Pioneer Days on Saturday, Nov. 14. The event is returning for a second year to celebrate Brownsboro’s rich history. Admission is free and a great way to get into the holiday mood. All other activities will take place on the Brownsboro High & Jr High School properties. Brownsboro is the oldest city in Henderson County and is proud of its heritage. The Brownsboro Chamber of Commerce works hard to spotlight the City’s origins but to also host an event that the community can enjoy.
