AHS students win Crisis Center poster contest

Athens High School art students (from left) Bianca Rodriguez, Leslie Rodriguez and Daniel Vazquez were awarded third, first and second places respectively in a poster contest for Teen Dating Violence Awareness. The contest was sponsored by the East Texas Crisis Center in conjunction with the “Go Blue” domestic violence awareness campaign and Henderson County United Way. The Crisis Center presented the winners with gift cards and ribbons and provided snacks for all participants at the high school. Who wants to partner up like a Super Bowl ad?

Just when you think you may have seen it all … the Super Bowl ads never cease to entertain and this year even hint at the future of business.

We expect great Super Bowl ads. This year’s Kia and Mini Cooper ads were great. We expect car companies to spend millions of dollars. We expect beer companies to spend millions of dollars and produce great ads. Budweiser Clydesdales and Dalmatian dogs.

We don’t expect mom and pop shops to advertise – it’s simply too expensive. A 30 second ad this year cost between $4 to $5 million dollars. Yes, $4,000,000 to $5,000,000. Wow.

But, this year I saw something new. I’m sure many of you saw it as well. The question is when you saw it did it strike you the same way that it struck me?

GBC boil water notice lifted

East Cedar Creek FWSD has announced that the Boil Water Notice for GBC has been lifted. The water test results from our certified lab is showing that was is safe for consumption. If you have any questions you may contact our office at 903-887-7103 Monday-Friday or after hours at 903-887-7200.

TxDOT update for the Week of Jan. 25

TxDOT are expected to be doing overlay work this week on FM 1615 between SH 19 and the End of State Maintenance as well as conducting base repairs on various roadways around the county. Be prepared for lane closures with flaggers directing traffic through the work zones.

In addition, the following construction projects will continue: SH 31 Repair Project (.09 miles west of FM 317 eastward to .34 miles west of FM 773); US 175 Widening Phase I (0.1 miles southeast of FM 804 near Baxter southeast to 1.1 miles east of Loop 60E at Larue) and Phase II (1.1 miles east of Loop 60B to 0.85 mile east of FM 315); FM 315/FM 1616 Widening (from FM 314S to CS End at County Road 4325, 4224, etc.); Cardinal Drive bridge replacement in Murchison.

Stiles nominated for Superintendent of the Year

At the recommendation of Athens ISD Board President Robert Risko, the school district trustees have approved and adopted a resolution nominating Blake Stiles for 2016 Superintendent of the Year “for his exemplary and visionary leadership toward improving student performance in our schools.”

“We have a great captain steering this ship,” said Risko.
