First Responders Appreciation luncheon

Kindred at Home held a First Responders Appreciation Lunch at Bacon Chevrolet in Athens Friday afternoon. The Athens High School fishing team was on hand to help serve.

Henderson County Commissioners declared Friday First Responders Appreciation Day at the request of Kindred at Home.

Jack Bell named grand marshal for Brownsboro Pioneer Days Parade

Not too many will remember the days of Dot’s Cafe in Brownsboro serving up burgers, cherry cokes, and hand-dipped ice cream. Jack Bell, former council member, will remember. Bell has been named as the Grand Marshal of this year’s Brownsboro Pioneer Days Parade. Bell is 94-years old and is believe to have the distinguished honor of being one of our oldest and longest residing residents. Dot’s dining experience came to an end after a devastating grease fire. According to some residents, they recall Bell being interviewed by television news crews the day of the fire that took place decades ago.

Obituary: Joy Gale Calhoun

calhoun-joyFuneral services for Joy Calhoun, 63 of Athens, Texas will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, October 17, 2016 at First Baptist Church of Cross Roads, Texas with Bro. Frank Upchurch officiating. A private family graveside will be held later and will be under the direction of Hannigan Smith Funeral Home of Athens. Mrs. Calhoun went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, October 13, 2016 in the company of her loving husband.

Joy Gale Calhoun was born on May 2, 1953 in Athens, Texas the daughter of Robert Lewis Sparks and Lois Ella Hickman Sparks. Joy retired from the Cross Roads Independent School District after 20 plus years as librarian. She was a member of Cross Roads First Baptist Church where she taught the children’s Sunday School class. Joy enjoyed reading, sewing and canning vegetables. She loved the outdoors, fishing and hunting with her husband. Those who knew her best knew she loved watching her grandkids in all of their activities. Joy was a loving wife, Mom, Maw Maw and will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Police investigate report of man shooting himself 

A 63-year-old man shot himself in the parking lot of the Henderson County Appraisal District Wednesday afternoon, according to Athens Police Chief Buddy Hill.

The man was taken from the scene by helicopter and was conscious, but there is no other word on his condition at this time.

The man’s estranged wife works at the Appraisal District, but she was not in the office when the man shot himself, said Hill.

Police say there is no indication the man intended to harm anyone other than himself.

There were no other details available this afternoon as police continue their investigation.
