Lady Cardinals Win Regionals; Headed to National Tournament

The Trinity Valley Community College Lady Cardinals earned a 13th trip a 20th trip to the national tournament — 13th to Salina, Kansas — with a 65-55 win over Tyler Junior College Saturday. (Thanks for the correction, Benny Rogers)

TVCC scoring came from Leashja Grant, 15; Maya Singleton, 15; Autummn Williams, 13; Kami Mickens, 8; Charisma Matlock 6; Jazmine Spears, 4; Dajhea Mullins 2; Dalona Jones 2.

Leashja Grant led the Lady Cards in rebounding with 12 boards.

If Lady Cards are No. 3 seed at national tourney, first game would be 5 pm Wednesday, March 18. If No. 4 seed, 6:30 pm, Tuesday, March 17.

Before the game, Lady Cardinal sophomore Jazmine Spears was named Region XIV Conference Player of the Year by league coaches, while Lady Cardinal Maya Singleton was named Region XIV Conference Co-Freshman of the Year.

Lady Cardinal sophomores Leashja Grant and Autummn Williams were named first team All-Conference.

Hart Joins TVCC Staff to Coach Defensive Line

Trinity Valley Community College athletic director/head football coach Brad Smiley has announced the addition of Darius Hart to the football staff.

Hart replaces Jermial Ashley, who left last month to accept a position on the staff at Tulsa University.

The newcomer to the Cardinal coaching staff arrives after a one-year stint as a graduate assistant at West Alabama University. The previous season, he was defensive line coach at Pearl River Community College. Continue reading “Hart Joins TVCC Staff to Coach Defensive Line”

Cardinals, Lady Cardinals in Regional Tournament

Region XIV tourney logoThe Region XIV Basketball Tournament is scheduled March 3-7 at the Jacksonville ISD gym (old Lon Morris College gym) in Jacksonville.

The Lady Cards are the No. 1 seed in the women’s bracket and will play their first game at 1 p.m. Wednesday. They play No. 8 seed Panola in the quarterfinals.

The Cardinals are the No. 2 seed in the men’s bracket and will play their first game at 6 p.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals. They will play the Tyler-Lee winner.

With Wednesday’s 77-62 win against Navarro in Corsicana, which completed a sweep of the Bulldogs, the seventh-ranked Cardinals have now clinched a bye in the opening round of the Region XIV Tournament, which is scheduled March 3-7 in Tyler.
