There’s a chance the Trinity Valley Community College Cardinals will never again be invited back to Florida.
The Cardinals went 3-0 in the Pensacola Classic over the Thanksgiving break – all three wins against Florida panhandle schools, including defending NJCAA champion Northwest Florida State.
Trinity Valley Community College celebrated the beginning of the Christmas season with its annual tree lighting ceremony held Monday evening on the Athens campus. TVCC’s brass ensemble and Encore choral group provided musical selections and President Dr. Glendon Forgey welcomed the crowd. TVCC energy specialist Shawn Leis emceed and announced the winners of the Cardinal Christmas coloring contest, which was open to children of TVCC employees and families. The third place winner was Clary Smiley, 9-year-old daughter of Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Brad Smiley; second place went to Aleiah McKee, 6-year-old daughter of Admission Specialist Alexandria Herrington and first place winner Colton Robertson, 10-year-old son of Human Resources Director Jennifer Robertson, was given the honor of lighting the tree.
The drama department presented a reading of Leon A. Harris’ “The Night Before Christmas – Texas Style,” TVCC cheerleaders and Cardettes escorted Santa onto the Bob J. McDonald Plaza as piano instructor Kirk Overmoe played “Here Comes Santa Claus.”

Trinity Valley Community College’s annual Cardinal Auction and Student Art Show opens Tuesday, Dec. 1, in the second floor lobby of the Ginger Murchison Learning Resource Center on the Athens campus. The show will feature works by TVCC art students on display through Sunday, Dec. 6, and will be open LRC regular hours Tuesday through Friday, 1-5 Saturday and 2-5 Sunday. The silent auction, which opens at 10 a.m. Tuesday and closes Wednesday at 3 p.m., will raise money to support the TVCC art department. The second-ranked Trinity Valley Community College Lady Cardinals posted a 2-1 mark in the annual WNIT Tournament at Midland College over the weekend, claiming a third-place finish with a 75-61 win against Iowa Western.
Second-year head coach Gerald Ewing’s Lady Cardinals (4-1) are scheduled to be on the road again Tuesday, going to Brenham to take on Blinn in their conference opener. Action tips off at 5:30 p.m.
