10 Observations from TVCC’s 56-43 loss to Snow College

Colt Atkinson, QT Barker, Dr. King and a bunch of crazy plays in this edition of 10 Observations.

Here are 10 observations from TVCC’s 56-43 loss to Snow College in the Battle in the Valley Saturday night at Bruce Field.

— There was a long line at the ticket booth as I walked into Bruce Field 45 minutes before kickoff, and I mean a looong line. A great crowd showed up for the game including a suprising number of Badger fans on the visitor side. Surprising because Snow College is from Utah.

— Any time you lose by double digits, including falling behind 24-0 in the first half, you can bet the coaches are going to have plenty of concerns. In fact, I am glad I wasn’t in the room when the TVCC coaches broke down the video. One thing they don’t have to worry about is the team’s heart. The Cardinals were able to cut the lead to just one touchdown with 10 minutes left in the game, but the deficit was too much to overcome. They never gave up, however, and fought to the very end.

Real football is finally here.

The No. 7-ranked TVCC Cardinals will kick-off the regular season 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, at Bruce Field against No. 4 Snow College.

Snow College is located in Ephraim, Utah.

The game is the annual Battle in the Valley, sponsored as always by Virtual Communication Specialists.

Every year, the Battle in the Valley pits the Cardinals against a highly-ranked team that would not ordinarily play in the Southwest Junior College Football Conference, and this year is no different. The Snow Badgers finished the 2017 season with a 10-1 record, including a 43-41 win over Blinn College in the El Toro Bowl.

The Cardinals are coming off a 9-3 season and have appeared in 62 straight NJCAA polls, including the last 23 in the Top 10.

5 observations from SWJCFC Media Day

By Michael V. Hannigan/Henderson County Now

The annual Southwest Junior College Football Conference Media Day was held Friday, July 27, at the Garden Valley Golf Resort. I made the drive through the (really) back roads of East Texas to attend the event.

The schools in the conference include: Blinn, Cisco, Kilgore, Navarro, Northeastern Oklahoma, New Mexico Military Institute, TVCC and Tyler.

If you’ve never been to one of these get-togethers, it mainly entails coaches standing behind a podium talking about the upcoming season followed by a chance for reporters to conduct interviews. Reporters also get to pick up each school’s media guide, which come in handy during the season.
