TVCC Phi Theta Kappa attends Regional Honors Institute

Five students and two advisors from Trinity Valley Community College’s Iota Alpha chapter of Phi Theta Kappa attended the Texas Regional Honors Institute at Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches, earning certificates as Texas Scholars for attendance. The event, held July 29-31, featured Advisors Nancy Long and Dr. Michael Felty as seminar leaders and Iota Alpha officers presenting two workshops at the Institute. As District 3 Coordinator for Texas Phi Theta Kappa, Long was part of the leadership team that planned the event.

Jones-Benson added to 2016 Cardinal Hall of Fame class

Teresa Jones-Benson has been added to the 2016 Cardinal Hall of Fame class at Trinity Valley Community College, it was announced Monday.

Jones-Benson was selected for induction in 2011, but was been unable to attend, as well as subsequent years. She will be attendance when the 2016 class is inducted on Saturday, Oct. 22.

Other inductees will be Betsy Coker Anderson, Joe Curl, Todd Fowler, Chris Landry and Lola Reescano.

TVCC announces 2016 Cardinal Hall of Fame class

Five new members have been selected to become the 2016 class for the Cardinal Hall of Fame at Trinity Valley Community College.

“This class is a great representation of the storied tradition of our athletic teams,” said Benny Rogers, sports information officer and chairman of the hall of fame selection committee. “Each of them made significant contributions to the success our athletic program has enjoyed through the years.

Team Rodriguez to lead TVCC softball program

Trinity Valley Community College has announced James Rodriguez will join his wife Kathleen as co-head coach of the Lady Cardinal softball program.

Kathleen Rodriguez was named head coach last month. James Rodriguez was later hired as a coaching assistant within the athletic department.

TVCC trustees Monday night approved the co-head coach designation, which is nothing new for the husband-wife combo. They previously served has co-head coaches at Eastern New Mexico University (three years) and University of Texas at El Paso (10 years).

Team Rodriguez led Eastern New Mexico to a fifth-place finish at the national tournament in 2001.

“It was a natural decision for us to make and something they wanted to do,” TVCC athletic director Brad Smiley said. “They have a combined 26 years as co-head coaches.

“We feel this gives us the best coaching staff in the region.”
