Back in Time: Cardinals to honor Spencer, don throwbacks

They’re going back in time at Trinity Valley Community College.

On a day designed to honor former longtime head coach and NJCAA and Cardinal Hall of Fame member Leon Spencer with the creation of a scholarship in his name, the Cardinals will don throwback uniforms when they take on the Paris Junior College Dragons in a Region XIV Conference contest at 4 p.m. at Cardinal Gym.

Cardinals top Lee College, 84-69

Outscoring Lee College 29-5 in the final 10 minutes of the first half, the Cardinals overcame a slow start and went on to cruise to an 84-69 Region XIV Conference victory Monday night at Cardinal Gym.

The win boosted Coach Guy Furr’s squad to 14-2 on the year and 5-0 in the conference.

The Cardinals are scheduled to travel Wednesday to Brenham to face Blinn in a 7:30 p.m. tipoff. Saturday, the Cardinals are at home against San Jacinto in a 4 p.m. start.

TVCC offers non-traditional Lunchtime Learning classes

Trinity Valley Community College’s Workforce Education Division is offering two new non-traditional career improvement opportunities. Lunchtime Learning classes will run from 12:15-1:30 p.m. January 16-May 7 and include Introduction to Accounting, Business Computer Applications and Introduction to Spreadsheets. All classes will be held in the Baugh Technology building on the Athens campus.

The first semester of night classes in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) will run from 5:30-8:50 p.m. Jan. 17-May 7 in the new Career and Technology building on the Athens High School campus.

Registration ends Thursday, January 11. For more information, contact the TVCC Workforce Education division at 903-675-6232.

Lady Cards, Cardinals both roll to weekend victories

The sixth-ranked Lady Cards used a big second half to log a 71-52 win on the road Saturday against Bossier Parish in their 2018 debut.

Leading 29-27 at the half. The Lady Cards outscored Bossier Parish 42-25 in the second half to improve to 14-1 overall and 4-1 in Region XIV Conference.

Michal Miller netted 18 points to lead four Lady Cards in double-digit scoring. Rodrea Echols had 17, Mercedes Brooks 12 and Tyasia Moore 10. Moore also had a team-high 12 rebounds.

TVCC’s Hurley appointed to Governor’s task force

Governor Greg Abbott has appointed Trinity Valley Community College’s Dr. Sam Hurley to the Task Force on Academic Credit and Industry Recognition for a term set to expire on Dec. 1, 2021. The task force was created by HB 553 during the 85th legislative session to identify academic credit and industry recognition for offenders within the Windham School at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
