TVCC graduates 258 during fall commencement ceremony Thursday

ATHENS – Trinity Valley Community College graduated 258 students during fall commencement ceremony Thursday at Cardinal Gym.

Five students – Dawn L. Carpenter of Kemp, Michael D. Carsten of Palestine, Kimberley L. Jackson of Crandall, Karen E. Jaquish of Malakoff and Melanie A. Reeves of Kaufman – graduated with highest honors, meaning they maintained a perfect 4.0 grade-point average.

TVCC President Dr. Glendon Forgey, who presented the graduation address, praised the achievements and perseverance of the graduates and said there’s a common misconception that community colleges are merely “transfer institutions.”

“Let me suggest – no, let me insist – that Trinity Valley is not a transfer institution, but a transforming institution,” Dr. Forgey said. “It is the goal of our college, our faculty and staff, that we transform lives one life at a time. Your transformation is evident with you being here tonight with the successful completion of your graduation.”

Trinity Valley Community College has a festive celebration planned to mark its fifth-annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony.

The ceremony is set for Monday, Nov. 25, at 7 p.m. at McDonald Plaza in the center of the Athens campus. Multiple campus groups are scheduled to be a part of the festivities.

The TVCC Cardinal Brass will kick off the event with music leading up to the beginning of the ceremony. The TVCC Cheerleaders will lead Christmas cheers and, with the assistance of the internationally-renowned TVCC Cardettes, escort Santa onto the premises. Santa will take free pictures with those in attendance.

The Chamber Singers and Brass band will conclude the ceremony with a sing-a-long.

This is a free event open to not only the campus, but the entire community. The ceremony will start promptly at 7 and last about 30 minutes.
