Athens High School earned first place at Thursday’s regional powerlifting meet in Rusk, led by four-time state qualifier Jose Rodriguez.

Rodriguez, a senior, won the 132-pound weight class by lifting a total of 1,135 pounds at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association Region 3, Division 2 meet. His 305-pound benchpress was not only a personal best, but it also set a new regional record. He also set a personal best with his 405-pound deadlift. Lady Cardinals Win Regionals; Headed to National Tournament

The Trinity Valley Community College Lady Cardinals earned a 13th trip a 20th trip to the national tournament — 13th to Salina, Kansas — with a 65-55 win over Tyler Junior College Saturday. (Thanks for the correction, Benny Rogers)

TVCC scoring came from Leashja Grant, 15; Maya Singleton, 15; Autummn Williams, 13; Kami Mickens, 8; Charisma Matlock 6; Jazmine Spears, 4; Dajhea Mullins 2; Dalona Jones 2.

Leashja Grant led the Lady Cards in rebounding with 12 boards.

If Lady Cards are No. 3 seed at national tourney, first game would be 5 pm Wednesday, March 18. If No. 4 seed, 6:30 pm, Tuesday, March 17.

Before the game, Lady Cardinal sophomore Jazmine Spears was named Region XIV Conference Player of the Year by league coaches, while Lady Cardinal Maya Singleton was named Region XIV Conference Co-Freshman of the Year.

Lady Cardinal sophomores Leashja Grant and Autummn Williams were named first team All-Conference.

Region IV Texas Junior High and High School Rodeo Finals to be held in Athens March 27-29

The Texas Junior High and High School Region IV rodeo finals will be held in Athens at the Henderson County Fairpark Coliseum starting at 7:00 pm on Friday, March 27th. Saturday’s action will begin with the Cutting Horse Competition at 9 a.m., followed by the rodeo at 10:30 am. Sunday starting at 9:00 am – church service and awards. Rodeo events include: Bareback, Saddle Bronc, Bull Riding, Jr. Bull Riding, Pole Bending, Goat Tying, Barrel Racing, Chute Dogging, Steer Wrestling, Tiedown Calf Roping, Breakaway Roping, Ribbon Roping and Team Roping.

The top 10 contestants in each event at the end of the weekend’s rodeo, will advance on to the Texas Junior High School State Finals Rodeo in Gonzales in May and the Texas High School State Finals Rodeo in Abilene in June. It is here, at the largest rodeos in the State of Texas, where “The Elite Compete” featuring the top cowboys and cowgirls from each region. They compete for numerous awards, scholarships and the coveted honor of representing the State of Texas at the National Junior High and National High School Finals Rodeo. Hart Joins TVCC Staff to Coach Defensive Line

Trinity Valley Community College athletic director/head football coach Brad Smiley has announced the addition of Darius Hart to the football staff.

Hart replaces Jermial Ashley, who left last month to accept a position on the staff at Tulsa University.
