Two Malakoff softball players sign letters of intent

A pair of Malakoff Lady Tiger softball players signed scholarship letters in a ceremony in the Malakoff High School gym Wednesday afternoon. Candace Denis signed with the University of Massachusetts and Hazel Puempel signed with Texas Women’s University.

Malakoff softball coach Matt Wittram said, “These young ladies have led Malakoff softball to one of our best seasons in the school’s history. They are also student-athletes in multiple sports, and have helped the girl’s athletic program in many areas.”

“We are extremely proud of both of these young ladies and their accomplishments. We want to wish both of you the best in your future endeavors,” he said.

Later than others, the No. 2-ranked Trinity Valley Community College Lady Cardinals will finally open the 2015-16 basketball season Friday.

Second-year head coach Gerald Ewing and his squad head west to compete in the two-day Clarendon Classic. The Lady Cardinals are scheduled to face Southwest Texas at 2 p.m. Friday and host Clarendon at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Jerod Evans named conference MVP

The record-setting season of Trinity Valley Community College quarterback Jerod Evans has resulted in him being named Southwest Junior College Football Conference Most Valuable Player.

The 6-4 Mansfield sophomore leads a contingent of 19 Cardinals named to the All-SWJCFC Football Team, which was released this weekend. Evans was also named first-team quarterback and to the all-region team.

Jonathan Jackson does more than lead cheers at Trinity Valley Community College. The Moreno Valley, California freshman is a leader for the Cardinal Cheerleaders, both in the classroom and among his teammates.

Jackson was named TVCC Student-Athlete of the Month at the final Cardinal Pride Luncheon of the fall semester Monday at Cotton Patch.
