Annual Cardinal Football Youth Skills Camp set June 6-10

The annual Cardinal Football Youth Skills Camp is scheduled June 6-10 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. at the TVCC practice field. The camp is open for students entering grades 1-8.

Cost of the camp is $85 before June 3 and $100 after June 3.

Checks should be made payable to TVCC. Late registration will be accepted the first day of the camp from 7:45-8:30 a.m.

The non-contact camp, which will be conducted by the Cardinal football coaching staff, will focus on instruction for position specific groups, both offensively and defensively. There will be constant activity and drills, and there will be constant activity and drills to ensure participants are never left unsupervised.

Campers should be dressed comfortably in athletic shorts, shirt and cleats or tennis shoes. Please note quarterbacks may want to bring their own ball, if preferred.

TVCC Summer Performance Camp scheduled June 13-30

Ready to run fast?

If you are a student (boy or girl) entering grades 8-12, Trinity Valley Community College is offering you that opportunity at the TVCC Summer Performance Camp.

The three-week camp is scheduled June 13-30 at the TVCC Football Field House. Camp sessions are Monday-Thursday from 1-2:30 p.m.

Cost of the game is $75 per week or $200 for three weeks.

The camp, conducted by the TVCC coaching staff, will focus on explosion/quickness/agility training, enabling participants an opportunity to learn great technique through drills, plyometric explosive movements and weight training.

Participants should bring flats/cleats and workout attire.

Cardinal Basketball Camp set June 13-16 at TVCC

The annual Cardinal Basketball Camp is scheduled June 13-16 at Trinity Valley Community College’s Cardinal Gym.

The camp is open for boys and girls in grades K-12.

The camp for boys and girls in grades 5-12 is set for 9 a.m.-noon. The camp for boys and girls in grades K-4 is set for 1-4 p.m.

Cost of the camp is $75 for each participant or $65 for each participant with if two or more family members attend.

Each camper will receive a camp T-shirt.

Emphasis of the camp will be on individual player offensive development and include competitions, contests and leagues.

The camp will be conducted by TVCC coaches and players.

AHS’ Sam Smith shines on and off softball field

They call her Sambino.

The first time a softball coach used the name on Samantha “Sam” Smith, he had to explain that baseball legend Babe Ruth was also called “The Great Bambino.” It sounded pretty good after that.

The Athens High School junior started playing softball at the age of 7. Her coaches, which included her father, Eric Smith, recognized quickly that she had an innate talent for the game.

“She could field a ball at third base and throw it on a rope to first base harder than most men could,” said Smith. “And when she came up to bat, all the infielders would back up to the grass, and the outfielders would back up to the fence because she hit the ball so hard and far.”
