Staubach to receive award at TVCC game Oct. 1

Multi-hall of fame and Heisman Trophy quarterback Roger Staubach will be in attendance on Saturday, Oct. 1, when the Trinity Valley Community College Cardinals take on New Mexico Military Institute in the Battle In The Valley at Bruce Field.

Staubach, a former multi-sport athlete at NMMI, will be on hand to receive an award for his induction into the NJCAA Hall of Fame in August. He will be presented the award from his alma mater prior to the coin toss.

The Cincinnati, Ohio native attended NMMI to help him prepare for entry into the United States Naval Academy. He was a one-year student during the 1960-61 school year, a private in the 1st platoon and 2nd squad of Company G, and he participated fully in the NMMI Corps of Cadets, all while playing three officially sanctioned junior college sports: football, basketball and baseball.

ACPA Storm soccer, volleyball in action

Athens Christian Preparatory Academy Storm played its inaugural TAPPS Fall soccer game this past Friday evening against East Texas Christian Academy Panthers at Lindsey Park in Tyler. Trailing, at one point, 5-0, the Storm rallied back only to fall short 7-4.

ACPA plays in TAPPS Division 1 District 2 which includes Longview-St. Mary’s, Longview Christian School, Nacogdoches-Regents Academy, and Tyler-East Texas Christian. The Storm will try and even their win-loss record Friday, September 9, against Longview-St. Mary’s here in Athens at Coleman Park. Game time is 5 p.m.

The ACPA Lady Storm volleyball team improved its season record to 4-5-1 with a 3 sets to 1 victory over Dallas-The Westwood School. The Lady Storm play again Tuesday, September 6, versus the Tyler HEAT. Game time is 6 p.m. and will be played at the Eastern Hills Church of Christ in Athens. TAPPS District 4-1A play begins Thursday evening as the Lady Storm will travel to Henderson to take on Full Armor Academy.
