Lady Cards, Cardinals both roll to weekend victories

The sixth-ranked Lady Cards used a big second half to log a 71-52 win on the road Saturday against Bossier Parish in their 2018 debut.

Leading 29-27 at the half. The Lady Cards outscored Bossier Parish 42-25 in the second half to improve to 14-1 overall and 4-1 in Region XIV Conference.

Michal Miller netted 18 points to lead four Lady Cards in double-digit scoring. Rodrea Echols had 17, Mercedes Brooks 12 and Tyasia Moore 10. Moore also had a team-high 12 rebounds.

TVCC Winter All-Skills Softball Clinic set Saturday, Jan. 20

The first in a series of softball clinics at Trinity Valley Community College is scheduled Saturday, Jan. 20 at Drumgoole Field and Cain Park.

The TVCC Winter All-Skills Clinic is set for two sessions. The first, from 10 a.m.-12 p.m., is for youngsters in grades K-6. The afternoon clinic, 2-4 p.m., if for students in Grades 7-12.

The cost is $30 per student. Registration will be accepted the day of the event.

The clinic will be conducted by TVCC co-head softball coaches Kathleen and James Rodriguez and members of the Lady Cardinal softball team.

Emphasis of the clinic will be to new learn new skills and sharpen other skills, allowing students to show off their talent and compete.

Leading the nation in mid-year football signees is nothing new for the Trinity Valley Community College Cardinals. It’s been that way for the better part of the last decade.

With 20 having recently signed to continue their education/playing career at D1/D2 universities, the Cardinals are well on their way at staying on top.

“We are very proud of the fact we move our kids on to the next level,” said first-year head coach Sherard Poteete. “No one in Texas is doing what we do.

“If a kid is looking for a place to win a championship, earn a degree and move on to the next level, we believe Trinity Valley is the place to be.”

Poteete named head football coach at TVCC

Trinity Valley Community College has announced the promotion of Sherard Poteete (photo) from offensive coordinator to head football coach.

Poteete, 39, will be introduced as the 17th Cardinal head football coach at 10 a.m. Monday in the lobby of the administration building on the Athens campus.

He replaces Brad Smiley, who resigned to accept the offensive coordinator position at Northwestern State University. Smiley leaves after 11 seasons as the all-time winningest head football coach in school history and as the longest-tenured along with the late Carl Andress.

Trinity Valley Community College athletic director/head football coach Brad Smiley has announced his resignation to become offensive coordinator at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana.

Smiley will coach the Cardinals for a final time Saturday at the C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl in Copperas Cove. The eighth-ranked and 8-3 Cardinals are scheduled to face No. 12 Garden City Community College, also 8-3, in an 11 a.m. kickoff. The resignation is effective at the end of the current semester.

He will leave after an 11-year tenure at TVCC in which he became the all-time winningest head football coach in college history with a 68-39 record. He also is the longest-tenured at the position along with the late Carl Andress.
