Happy birthday, Brittney!

IMG_24866257177666921 year’s ago today I was blessed to have become a mother for the 1st time. I was so scared as I held you close to me because, you were so tiny and fragile. I look back and laugh because, you were as perfect as they come. You were a good baby, talented, smart, happy, and beautiful. Where has the time gone? You are married with a baby of your own and still as BEAUTIFUL as ever. I know life has been hard and you had to grow up faster than most but, you have stood tall with your head held high. I’m proud of you and I know your Daddy, Poppy, Grandma, and Grandpa are proud of the woman you have become!! I love you baby girl with all my heart and soul. Happy Birthday!

Love, Mama, Nick, Nanny, Shelby, Briar, Trinity, Uncle Charlie and Uncle Doug!!

Brittney is the Daughter of the late Jeff Tucker and Grand-daughter of Buster Tucker!! The Grand-daughter of the late: Jerry and Elmira Logan!!

Congratulations, Ernie, on rolling a 300!

Ernie Gerich bowled a perfect game last night at Lakeplex Lanes in Seven Points. Thank you to Kimberly Gerich for sharing this with us. Kimberly wrote that a perfect game was “something he had only dreamed about and it finally happened for him. He is still today very happy at what he accomplished. He will now receive a ring for his accomplishment. It goes to show never give up, and your dreams can and will come true.”

Rashaan Miller: From Hurricane Katrina to AHS Student of the Month

It was the end of summer in 2005, and 8-year-old Rashaan Miller was getting ready to start a new school year. He doesn’t remember much from that time. He certainly didn’t know Hurricane Katrina, one of the deadliest storms in the history of the United States, was bearing down on his city and his family’s Ocean Avenue home.

“The night before we left, I remember my mom was watching the news,” recalled Miller, now a 17-year-old senior at Athens High School. “She told us to pack our bags and get ready to leave. We left the next morning … two days before the hurricane hit. I was clueless.”

Miller’s mother gathered up her two boys, her mother and other friends and family and fled with thousands of other evacuees toward Texas. They drove until they arrived in Athens. It looked like a good place to rest.

“We just stopped when we wanted to get some sleep,” recalled Miller. The exhausted and displaced group took a room at what was then the Spanish Trace Inn and received some assistance from First Baptist Church of Athens. “I asked my mom a few weeks into staying at the hotel if we were going to go back home, and she said no. Everything is wiped clean.” Continue reading “Rashaan Miller: From Hurricane Katrina to AHS Student of the Month”

LETTER: Hornet-Ex Says Thank You For Night to Remember

I would like to thank Coach Paul Essary , his wife Doenye, Toni Clay and a special thanks to Regina Fluker and Yvonne Sparks for making Homecoming for the 1964 Athens Hornets “A Night to Remember.”

As we walked on Bruce Field for the first time in 50 years it brought back memories that many of us had stored away years ago. Many of life’s lessons were learned and shaped on that field with our teammates. Each of us, in our heart, would love the chance to wear the Maroon and White just one more time.

Hornets 2014, the 1964 Hornet team members are proud of you and your accomplishments and how you represent Athens High School. Remember, there are no Ex-Hornets, only Hornet —Exes.

Once again, thanks for the memories.

Danny Tidmore, Hornet-Ex, #20
