Funeral Services for Brenda Mills Smith, 64, of Athens are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, June 8, 2017 at the Hannigan Smith Funeral Home with interment following at Rome Cemetery near Athens. Bro. Gene Bishop and Chief Buddy Hill will be officiating the services.

Brenda went to be with her Lord and Savior on June 4, 2017 in Tyler.

Brenda Kay Mills Smith was born May 11, 1953 in Athens, Texas the daughter of Irvin Edward Mills Jr. and Lucille Boyd Mills. She spent her working career as a dispatcher serving emergency services for over 40 years; 10 years with the Henderson County Sheriff’s office, over 26 years with the East Texas EMS, 1 year with the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office and the Athens Police Department for 3 years. Her love and dedication to the men and women in these communities is evident in the outpouring of love and support she and her family received during her sickness and beyond. Her hobbies included cooking and going to garage sales. “Nan” was a loving mother, sister and grandmother who will be greatly missed by all those that she touched.

Obituary: Thelma Stout

Funeral services for Thelma Stout, 86, of Athens are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, June 1, 2017 at the Hannigan Smith Funeral Home in Athens with Bro. Gene Bishop officiating.

Thelma passed away on May 29, 2017 in Athens.

Thelma Juneau Stout was born July 3, 1930 in Sicily Island, Louisiana the daughter of Jimmy Juneau and Jimmie Ourlia Juneau. She was a member of the West Athens Baptist Church in Athens and spent countless hours raising her family. “Granny” was a loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed cooking and canning, sewing and gardening. Her professional career was spent in food service, retiring from Winn Dixie after many years.

Obituary: James Burns

Funeral services for James Burns, 90, of Murchison are scheduled for 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at the Hannigan Smith Funeral Home in Athens.

James passed away on May 25, 2017 in Tyler.

James Earnest Burns was born December 18, 1926 in Dallas, Texas the son of Scott Vernon Burns and Edna Crouch Burns. He joined the United States Navy and served as a Seaman Second Class on the U.S.S. Detroit during World War II. James was a Christian and a hard-working man. He spent the last 27 years of his working career in Murchison as an auto body mechanic. He was a loving father, brother, grandfather and great grandfather who will be missed.

Obituary: Peggy Brown

Funeral services for longtime Athens resident Peggy Sue Brown, age 84, have been scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, May 25, 2017, at the First Christian Church of Athens with Rev. Kern Railsback officiating. Burial will follow at Athens Cemetery under the direction of Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home.

Peggy entered her heavenly home on May 20, 2017. She was born August 3, 1932, in Athens. She was the first of three children of James Lonnie Brown and Launa Gertrude Rusk Brown. She graduated from Athens High School and attended Henderson County Junior College, receiving an associate degree in business. Peggy never married but chose to lead her life as a professional woman. She spent most of her career in the banking business and rose to president before retiring.

Obituary: Charles Morman

A memorial service for Charles Morman, 55, of Athens will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 27, 2017 at Hannigan Smith Funeral Home of Athens with Bro. Frank Upchurch officiating.

Mr. Morman passed away May 15, 2017 in Tyler, Texas.

Charles Morman was born December 24, 1961 in Athens, Texas the son of Arlan Cone Morman and Katherine Shirey Morman. He was a mechanic and had a passion for Old Hot Rods and loved working on them. He also was an avid outdoorsman who loved camping, hunting and fishing. Papa was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be missed by all that knew him.
