Obituary: Harold ‘Holly’ Holyfield

Graveside services and inurnment for Harold “Holly” Holyfield 74, Athens have been scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, at Athens Cemetery with Lurna Cumby officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Autry’s Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home, Athens.

Harold passed away November 27, 2017 in Athens.

He was born March 5, 1943 to Edwin Faber and Bernice Bunker Holyfield. He was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather. In his younger years, he was involved in all types of sports either coaching or as a spectator for his children and grandchildren. He was the owner/operator of Ole’ West Steak House for 40 years. This is where he made many lifelong friends. He will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved him.

Obituary: Jerry Cass

Funeral Services for Jerry Cass, 83, of Murchison, will be held noon Monday, Dec. 4, at the Hannigan Smith Funeral Home in Athens with Pastor Dave McGee officiating.

Mr. Cass passed away November 30, 2017 in Murchison.

Jerry Olive Cass was born March 13, 1934, in Paris, Texas the son of Howard Cass and Velma Johnson Cass. He was a member of Dogwood Church in Athens and the Athens Singles group. He worked for over 25 years for Sherwin Williams before retiring to do construction and building work as he enjoyed making things and working with wood. His hobbies included fishing, flying remote control planes, traveling and taking cruises. He was a loving father and grandfather and will be missed by many.

Obituary: Nelda Jean Loper

Nelda Jean Loper age 79, of Athens, passed away on November 29, 2017. She was born on June 2, 1938, to Jess Hayden Ramsey and Emma Larue Middlebrook Ramsey.

She is preceded in death by her parents; one son, Tony Loper; brothers, Bobby Joe Ramsey, Norman Earl Ramsey; one sister, Linda Sue Ramsey.
Nelda was a very loving and dedicated person to her family and friends. She had a very loving and loyal relationship with her mother-in-law. Nelda was a member of Bethel Christian Church for many years of which she loved dearly. She enjoyed cooking, shopping, decorating and camping.
Survivors include her loving husband of 60 years, Carl Loper; one son, Ronnie Loper and wife Angela; her sister, Jessie Nell Dixon; her grandchildren, Bryan Loper and wife Katherine and Jessica Loper; her great-grandchildren, Khloie Loper and Blaize Loper; niece, Tammy Womble; nephew, Michael Rula.

The family would like to invite you to a visitation at Bethel Christian Church on Monday, December 4, 2017, at 1 p.m., followed by the funeral service at 2 p.m. with Rev. Mike Baldwin officiating. Burial to follow at Shelby Chapel Cemetery in Athens. Autry’s Carroll-Lehr is in charge of arrangements.

Obituary: Chester McManus

Funeral Services for Chester McManus, 81, of Athens will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, at the Hannigan Smith Funeral Home in Athens with Bro. Gene Bishop officiating.

Mr. McManus passed away on Nov. 28, 2017 in Tyler.

Chester Owen McManus was born Nov. 30, 1935 in Malakoff, Texas the son of Lawrence McManus and Lucy Blackmon McManus. He was a member of the Shady Oaks Baptist Church and loved playing darts. He was known as a hard-worker spending 32 years as a mold maker at AthTex Ceramics.

Obituary: Janet Marie Mitchell

Funeral services for Janet Marie Mitchell 72, Athens have been scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, at Autry’s Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Tony Watson officiating.

Private burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park, Athens.

Janet was born March 14, 1945, in Fort Dodge, Iowa to the late Eugene and Louise Negethon and grew up in Oak Cliff, Texas and raised her children in Duncanville, Texas. She worked for KDFW in Dallas for more than 18 years. She had been a resident of Athens for many years. She loved to paint and through this medium she expressed her love of nature and landscapes.
