Obituary: Thomas Hudson

A Funeral Mass will be held for Thomas Hudson, 83, of Palestine at 10 a.m., Thursday, May 31, 2018 at the St. Edwards Catholic Church of Athens with Father Nolan Lowry officiating.

Mr. Hudson passed away peacefully in his home in Palestine, Texas on May 25, 2018.

Thomas Weldon Hudson was born September 24, 1934 in Carthage, Texas the son of Thomas Newton Hudson and Sybil Barton Hudson. Joined the National Guard and spent several years serving before taking a position as a pipeliner. He spent his career traveling and doing pipeline work before retiring from Reading & Bates Construction as a procurement supervisor. He was a member of St. Edwards Catholic Church and very active in the Knights of Columbus; joining in Superior, Wisconsin; later helping start the Malakoff and Athens chapters and eventually earning his 3rd Degree. Thomas was a jack of all trades who loved building things, being an all-around handyman and enjoyed working on his cars. He was a loving husband and brother who will be missed by all he knew and loved.

Obituary: Mary Fern Glover Price

Mary Fern Glover Price, 74, of Athens, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on May 21, 2018. She was born on August 11, 1943 to Bennie Ross and Willie Fern Glover, in Athens.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Mary attended Henderson County Junior College and was elected cheerleader, a member of Kappa Alpha Pi Sorority. She was chosen as “Cutest Freshman Girl” and was a member of the choral club. After junior college, Mary went on to East Texas University and earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Physical Education and English. She accepted her first teaching job at Pittsburg High School where she taught Senior Health class. She was the volleyball coach for the A and B Volleyball teams and was the sponsor of the 100-member drill team. After 2 years at Pittsburgh High School she accepted a job at Murchison Junior High School where she taught grammar and coached basketball, those students became very special to her and were later in hers and Vernon’s wedding. From there she went to Athens Junior High School and taught Special Education. After teaching in Athens, she accepted a job teaching 6th grade Health and Science at Malakoff Junior High School.

Obituary: Ethel May Johns

Ethel May Johns of Athens, Texas passed peacefully on May 18, 2018, in Tyler, Texas. She was 84. Ethel was born on August 9, 1933 to her parents, Leonard and Louise May, in Dallas, Texas. After the passing of her mother, she and her two brothers, Eugene and Roy May, went to live at the Corsicana State Orphans’ Home. She dearly loved the time with her new-found family and worked tirelessly in keeping the history and memories of the home alive serving on the Board of Directors as President, Secretary and Treasurer, as well as providing philanthropic support.

Obituary: Reuben Richards

Graveside services for Reuben Richards, 87, of Athens are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, May 26, 2018 at Patterson Cemetery near Corsicana, Texas with Bro. Mike Curry officiating. Services are under the direction of Hannigan Smith Funeral Home of Athens.

Mr. Richards went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, May 19, 2018 in Athens.

Reuben Edward Richards was born January 31, 1931 in Emhouse, Texas the son of Reuben Dave Richards and Ada Mae Carroll Richards. He was a Veteran of the United States Army and later worked for the United States Treasury Department in both Kansas City, Kansas and Austin, Texas where he retired in 1995. He married the love of his life Virginia Ann Biggers on June 6, 1958, he loved the Lord and was a dedicated member of the Lake Athens Baptist Church. Reuben was an avid sportsman who truly enjoyed taking his boat out on several lakes to fish and was a big Dallas Cowboy and Texas Longhorn fan. He had a passion for listening to gospel, bluegrass and country music and also sitting in his chair watching the many kinds of birds that he fed in his backyard.

Obituary: Douglas Hal Groom

Douglas Hal Groom, born December 10, 1950 in Dallas, Texas, went to join his guitar picking brethren in the sky May 16, 2018. Neither angel, nor saint, his energetic life was marked by music, humor, many friendships, and he recently found his Christian faith for the next show. Facing terminal cancer with courage, Doug said, “let’s get this rodeo on.”

He is survived by his wife, Judy, sons Doug Jr., David and Billy Jack Christie, sisters Saran Knight and Dewetta Crow, brother Richard Groom, grandchildren Abbey and Mason Groom, Jackson and Bruce Christie and a colorful host of friends and fans.
