Funeral Services for Billie Turner of Athens are scheduled for 3:00 P.M. Sunday, September 30, 2018 at the Hannigan Smith Funeral Home in Athens with Bro. Charles Parker officiating. Interment will follow at Blackjack Cemetery.

Billie passed away on September 24, 2018 in Athens at the age of 43.

Billie Darlene Turner was born May 20, 1975 in Dallas to Frankie Lee Turner and Gail Darlene Barnes Turner. She was a member of the Central Baptist Church. On her free time, she enjoyed playing games and spending time with her family. She was a diehard football fan who loved her Cowboys. She truly did love everyone and took on all she knew as family. She will be missed by all who got to know her.

Obituary: Isaac Nelson Miller, Jr.

Isaac Nelson Miller Jr. “Ike” passed away on September 24, 2018 in Kaufman, Texas at the age of 93.

He was born April 21, 1925 in Henderson County, Texas to the late Isaac Nelson Miller and the late Jessie Pearl Montgomery. He was the youngest of 9 siblings. He was married to Vema Ray Miller of Henderson County for 76 years until her death in 2017. Together they made their home in Seagoville, Texas where they raised 3 sons.

Obituary: Major Brandon Hawn McElroy

On Tuesday, September 18, 2018, Major Brandon Hawn McElroy, of Athens, TX passed away at the age of 43.

Brandon was born on January 13, 1975 in Dallas, Texas to Ronald and JoAnne (Hawn) McElroy. After graduating from Athens in 1993, where he was a member of the 1992 District Football Champions, Brandon attended Texas A&M University, where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets and Parson’s Mounted Cavalry. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in History in 1998. In 2004, Brandon earned his Master’s in History from Stephen F. Austin State University and was commissioned in the United States Army. Brandon served two tours in Iraq and one in Kuwait and was awarded numerous military honors, including the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, and Army Service Ribbon.

Obituary: Jack Gilbert

Funeral services for Jack Gilbert 78, Athens have been scheduled for 1:00 P.M. Tuesday September 18, 2018 at Autry’s Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jimmy Allen officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park, Athens.

Mr. Gilbert passed away Friday morning in Tyler.

Jack was born April 14, 1940 in Denton, Arkansas to the late Andrew Jackson and Willie Emma White Gilbert. He was a veteran of the United States Army. He was a resident of Athens for 30 plus years and was an Assembly of God by faith. He was a master of all trades and loved to tinker with cars and spend time in his garden. Jack was an entrepreneur involved in many types of businesses during his life. He retired 10 years ago but his love for interacting with people and his desire to help them, he reentered the workforce working for Lowes the last 2 years before his health declined.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 4 brothers and 4 sisters.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Mary Gilbert of Athens, daughters; Celia Boone and her husband Chris, Corsicana, Jackye Simon and her husband Herb, Mena, Ar., Eugenia Whittaker and her husband Kenyon, Bradleyville, Mo., son; Eric Gilbert and his wife Amy, Cross Roads, grandchildren; Michael, Lance, Paul, Megan, Christina, Mark, Chelsie, Derrick and Sam., 14 great-great grandchildren, brother; Tommy Gilbert and his wife Gail, Honey Grove, Texas, sister; Elizabeth Capp, Littlerock, Ar.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation for family and friends will be held Monday evening September 17, 2018 at the funeral home.

Obituary: Regina Speckmann Askew

Regina Speckmann Askew, age 53, went to be with the Lord on September 11, 2018, at her home in Athens. Regina was born on August 5, 1965 in Dallas, Texas to Mary Dozier Meyer and Oliver Redd.

She earned her associate degree in nursing from Tyler Junior College in 2010. She married Troy Askew on September 1, 2007. Regina enjoyed boating, four wheeling, and time spent with her family.
