Military News: Tarius Manning

U.S. Air Force Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Tarius Manning graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Manning is the son of Tammy and brother of Tiara Manning, and brother of Tamaria Manning of Brownsboro.

He is a 2014 graduate of Brownsboro High School.

Military News: Joshua L. Sims

Sims is the son of Earlie D. and Rebecca A. Sims of Athens, brother of Eric S. Sims of Tacoma, Wash., Stephanie M. Sims of Athens, and Nic Sims of North Richland Hills, Texas, and grandson of Rafael and Rita M. Fernandez of Raymondville, Texas.

He is a 2016 graduate of Athens High School. He earned an associate degree in 2016 from Trinity Valley Community College.

Military News: Cody L. Duncan

U.S. Air Force Airman Cody L. Duncan graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Duncan is the son of Tina M. Cooper of Lindale, Texas, and Clinton W. Duncan of Eustace, Texas.

He is a 2016 graduate of Eustace High School.

Athens native serves aboard a U.S. Navy Ballistic Missile Submarine

BANGOR, Wash. – A 2005 Athens High School graduate and Athens, Texas native is serving in the U.S. Navy as part of a crew working aboard one of the world’s most advanced ballistic missile submarines, the USS Henry M. Jackson.

Petty Officer 1st Class Micah Brookes is a culinary specialist serving aboard the Bangor-based boat, one of 14 Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines.

As a Navy culinary specialist, he is responsible for leading the culinary specialists and managing the production of food service for the boat.

“This job is a challenge and it keeps you on your toes,” said Brookes. “I am always learning new things. It makes you think in different ways because there is always new problems that you have to figure out on your own.”
