Around the Town: A very special reunion for Loretta
By Loretta Humble/Around the Town
If Viola Maness hadn’t called me I would have missed the Cross Roads School Reunion. I sure am glad she called me. It was a really small group, 21 in all I believe, mostly made up as folks older than me, which is pretty old. I understand attendance is up from last year. Two of the biggest promoters of these meetings have been Viola and Margaret Smith. I particularly love getting to see them as they were life-long friends of my sister Mary, who they call Mary Elizabeth. Their faces light up when they talk about her.
I didn’t graduate from Cross Roads, as the school burned after my freshman high school year, and the next year I was bussed to the big town of Malakoff where I finished my last three years. Most of my class came with me, but a few went to Athens.

Malakoff ISD students attend Region Food Show
Each year more than 30 million children go through school cafeteria lines every day in the United States and thanks to the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, which took effect in 2012, they no longer serve homemade rolls, salty French fries and sauced up chicken wings. School meals must now be lower in fat, calories and sodium and contain lean proteins, more fruits and vegetables and whole grains. And kids from coast to coast are wrinkling their noses.
Malakoff ISD Child Nutrition Director Tanya Berry takes a group of students every year to the Region 7 Food Show allowing them to have a voice in the foods they eat. This year she took students from Mr. Perry’s Superintendent’s Student Advisory Committee and MMS APBL Class, and they got the opportunity to try out new food items and recommend some new menu items for the following school year.
Berry has worked with the Cross Roads and Trinidad school districts in assisting them with their school menus this school year. She had the opportunity to meet with some of those students from Cross Roads ISD and they are pleased with the new menus.
The mission of Malakoff ISD Child Nutrition is to provide nutritionally sound meals that support the goal of the effective delivery of academic and/or extra-curricular services to the students of Malakoff. Managers Jennifer Gonzales and Debbie Scarborough also attended the food show with the students.
Students who attended were Tyler Crews, Katelyn Crews, Hector Romero, Fantasia Bryant, Ethan Dunacusky, Allison Holt, Pricila Garcia, Brittany Baker, Judd Driskell, Zymiajah Thomas and Kanicia Sally.
Malakoff ISD raises over $2,700 for Dickinson ISD
Statement from Malakoff ISD re: helping Dickinson ISD:
Malakoff ISD administrators wanted to help our fellow Texans that lived through Hurricane Harvey. The district decided to partner with another district in the affected areas. We wanted our students to have the opportunity to help others in need. We chose Dickinson ISD. Both Malakoff Elementary and Tool Elementary held spare change donations. Malakoff Middle School held a dance. Malakoff High School held a pie in the face competition with the largest donation designating which staff member would get the pie in the face. Asst. Principal and Band Director Chad Bentley won that honor.
In all, our students and staff raised a total of $2,706.25 for their fellow students in Dickinson ISD. The funds were sent to the Dickinson ISD Education Foundation’s Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund.
