The Malakoff High School Student Council and the Pride of Malakoff Marching Band conducted a Christmas food drive for Faith In Action Outreach this year. The students collected specific items to go in Brookshire’s/FIAO Christmas boxes and then even more. Teri Caswell of FIAO said, “Malakoff Tigers are grrrreat!” (Courtesy photo)
A couple of months ago I told you my daughter Liz Allen came back from her Meals on Wheels route dragging an old boat on a boat trailer, saying she was going to make a Christmas parade float out of it. It was kind of cute in an old fashioned way. Liz likes to emphasize the “Lake” part of the names of our companies, Cedar Lake Nursing Home and Cedar Lake Home Health and Hospice. So when she uses the phrase, “Life is better at the Lake,” she means “Life is better at Cedar Lake.” She figured that old boat would be the perfect match for us, one we could take to every parade for the rest of our lives. I thought she was nuts, but I’ve learned to never underestimate that red headed girl.
Here at the Malakoff Housing Authority we are asking for the help of our community/chamber members during this holiday season to adopt a child from our Angel Tree. MHA provides subsidized housing for low income residents and families. We have 28 children that range in age from 17 years old to 2 months old this year. We are in need of children’s gifts, clothing, gift cards and monetary donations any and all donations are welcome and very much appreciated.
Our goal this year is to make sure every child is adopted from our Angel Tree, and wake up Christmas morning with at least a gift or two, under the Christmas Tree that brings a smile of joy and happiness to their faces.
I am confident with the support from generous community/chamber members like you; we can make some children really happy this Christmas Season!

Flooding along the Trinity River in Trinidad forced TxDOT to shut down the westbound lane of State Highway 31 between Malakoff and Trinidad Wednesday morning. The road was completely covered by water in some spots.
Around 11:15 a.m., the National Weather Service announced that the river appeared to have crested at 48.5 feet. According to the NWS, it is the third highest level on record.

Pct. 2 Commissioner Wade McKinney said county officials were monitoring areas along the river “where life and property might be at risk.”
“All along the Trinity River there are locations where individuals can become stranded in their homes,” he said. “Law enforcement and volunteer fire departments are aware of those locations and are coordinating to respond as the need arises.”
“It has been a few years since we have had situations like this occur due to the drought conditions. But we know the locations and many of the individuals who live in those locations,” McKinney added.
