I told you in my last column that I haven’t had anything exciting happening to me lately. Well, last week I did at least get my heart rate up for a little while.

First I need to tell you that nearly three weeks ago Carl was attacked by a terribly itchy red rash, apparently caused by a reaction to a new medication. Carl, as a disabled veteran gets all his medical care provided at no cost to him. The only problem is, he has to drive a ways to get it. And where he goes is to the huge Veteran’s Hospital in Dallas. If you have never been there, you have missed something. It is like a city under one roof. A person could get lost in it. Well, I could get lost in it.

So Malakoff ISD, what’s better than having a nationally-recognized, Blue Ribbon elementary school?

Having two.

Malakoff Elementary School was nominated and earned the national Blue Ribbon recognition in 2015, and Wednesday it was announced that Tool Elementary School has been nominated in 2016.

“Tool Elementary is one of only 26 campuses from all the campuses around the state to receive this honor,” said Superintendent Randy Perry. “Malakoff ISD is very proud of the leadership of Principal Christal Calhoun and the hard working teachers, staff and students of Tool Elementary.

Calhoun said the school and community were excited to hear the news.

“Today has been a great blessing for the staff, students and the many community members who support Tool Elementary,” she said. “To have an opportunity to be acknowledged for your effort and achievement is a wonderful experience. We are excited to accept this nomination and will wait anxiously for the final results. Tool Elementary will continue to give everything we’ve got to provide a strong foundation for each student.”

Former Malakoff ISD teacher issues statement on resignation

A former Malakoff ISD teacher and coach who resigned in October 2015 amid allegations he had “improper communications” with a female high school student reached out to the Athens Daily Review this week to issue a statement.

Cook was a middle school teacher and coach when he resigned.

In a story by Rich Flowers, Cook is quoted as saying, “In this situation, I was led to believe the young lady was 27 from her Facebook profile and from a different, nearby town. I was not aware of her actual age or her status as a part-time student at Malakoff ISD when conversation was initiated. I later discovered that she was 18.”

Cook said he never met the student face-to-face and there was no physical contact.

There was no explanation of why Cook is issuing a statement now, nearly three months after the incident.
