Around the Town: Learning to propagate figs

Note: While Kristi is busy moving into her new home right in the center of downtown Malakoff, I felt I needed to fill this space again this week. However, I’ve been busy trying to prepare a paper for a Master Gardener assignment. But I’ve just noticed it sounds more like one of my columns than it does a research paper, so I thought maybe it could do double-duty. So here it is. I hope some of you are vaguely interested in fig propagation.

I want to talk to you about propagating figs. That may sound like kind of lame, since figs may be the Number One easy-to-propagate plant in the whole world. But I have come upon a new slant that produce a new fig tree much faster. I saw it on YouTube. However, this assignment requires me to cite some respectable sources for this paper, and YouTube is not on that list. So I will briefly discuss the standard propagation methods, which are easy to find sources for. Then I will end up with the method I am really excited about. I even thought I would do a little propagating and include that in my paper.

Monday, Malakoff High School and Malakoff Middle School students, with the help of MISD School Board President Rick Vieregge, placed flags at the grave sites of veterans buried at the Malakoff Cemetery and the Steen Cemetery. This is a great time to teach students about the sacrifices that our veteran’s and their families make for the freedom’s we have. MHS Principal Martin Brumit said, “I enjoy letting our students participate in this event for Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day each school year.” (Courtesy photo)

Around the Town: The Frog Incident

toad-frogBy Loretta Humble/Around the Town

You know those limp squishy little things that some people have on their key rings? I think they are there to make your keys harder to lose. I should get one and see if it would help. Last week I thought for a minute I had one.

I was standing in front of the information desk of the Dallas VA Hospital. I reached for my purse and thought I felt one of those squishy key things. But it was cold. I pulled it up to examine it, and found myself meeting the steely gaze of a medium sized toad frog.

This totally blew my mind. You would think I would be embarrassed, and maybe try to slip him back in my purse before anybody noticed. But this was too amazing to not share. So I held him up to show the people at the desk and people passing by. “Look,” I said, “there was a frog in my purse!” Everybody was impressed.

Around the Town: Great turnout for Cornbread & Scarecrow Festival

By Kristi Huls

What a fantastic turnout we had for our annual Cornbread & Scarecrow Festival! The day started and ended with such good weather putting everyone in a very festive mood. Downtown and other local merchants opened early on Saturday and served up sales throughout their stores, drinks and snacks all day. We really appreciate everyone visiting our stores and supporting small, local businesses. Without you we can’t keep doing what we love.

The crowd at the community center this year was better than expected! Great food, very creative vendors selling their wares inside and out, so many dogs dressed in costume, they had to have two contests, face painting was a huge hit along with pumpkin painting and pumpkin seed spitting (which was won by a girl this year).
