Drug dealer sentenced to 10 years

Jason Shane Sorrells, 43, formerly of Payne Springs, was sentenced last week to 10 years in prison for Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Deliver. 173rd Judicial District Court Judge, Dan Moore sentenced Sorrells after pleading guilty to the charge.

Assistant District Attorneys Justin Weiner and Nancy Rumar prosecuted the case on behalf of Scott McKee’s District Attorney’s Office.

Malakoff teacher, coach resigns after allegations of improper communication

A Malakoff Middle School teacher and coach has resigned following allegations he had “improper communications” with a female high school student.

Paul Cook, who taught 6th grade world history, resigned Monday afternoon, according to Malakoff ISD Superintendent Randy Perry.

Perry said he began investigating the allegations of improper communication — which included text messages — Monday morning.

Perry said there is no evidence at this time that there was a physical relationship between Cook and the student.

The legal investigation into the incident continues, Perry said.

Convicted drug dealer gets 15 years in prison

An Athens man is headed back to prison after pleading guilty on Tuesday to Possession of a Controlled Substance. Phillip Deljuan Conner, 35, was sentenced to 15 years in prison by Judge Carter Tarrance of the 392nd Judicial District Court.

Conner was arrested on April 2, 2015 when deputies from the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office were attempting to arrest a different individual on an arrest warrant from Dallas County for an unrelated case. The man wanted in the warrant lived next door to Conner. When deputies arrived, the wanted man wasn’t there. After speaking with some other neighbors, deputies knocked on Conner’s door in hopes that the wanted man was in Conner’s residence.
