Ally Odom may be missing from the Henderson County Livestock Show this year, but she is surely not forgotten.

Ally was supposed to be one of the #HCLS Princess nominees, but she is still in the hospital after suffering serious injuries in a barrel racing injury March 22.

The good news is she is recovering well, according to her mother Paula Odom. More good news is that the community has stepped up to help the family at this difficult time.

“I want to say as many thank yous as I can to the people who have helped,” Paula told me today. “I am overwhelmed by how many people have come forward.”

The community continues to step forward, and now there is a benefit trail ride scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, April 19, at Trace Trails. The event is sponsored by the Henderson County Horse Committee, which is also accepting donations to help the Odom family with the medical bills.

For more information, contact Charlotte Allgood at 903-288-0043 or Gary Hill at 903-880-3230.

There was even a Carter BloodCare blood drive at the Fairpark Complex today in honor of Ally.

“It is all very overwhelming,” said Paula. “I cannot say thank you enough.”

#HCLS, Where the Whole County Comes Together

By Michael V. Hannigan

We recorded a podcast yesterday previewing the 54th Annual Henderson County Livestock Show, and during the podcast Jeff Weinstein asked me a question I couldn’t answer.

He asked how many kids will take part in the Livestock Show during the week.

So today, I tracked down Henderson County AgriLife Extension Agent Rick Hirsch and asked him, and Rick said there would be between 500 and 600 students participating with nearly 1,800 entries.

“That’s everything across the week,” Rick said.

That’s a lot of kids.

Rick and I both agreed that one of the neatest things about the Livestock Show is that it includes the entire county. Students from all four corners of Henderson County come to the fairgrounds for the show.

“This is every part of the county working together,” Rick said.

He pointed out that Monday is setup day and yesterday saw groups of kids from all the different schools working together, under the direction of their ag teachers and other adult leaders, to set up the fairgrounds for the show.

“It was all empty and in about five hours we were ready for animals,” said Rick. “(The students) were getting some life skills doing that.”
