City of Athens press release

On Monday, Nov. 20, the sewer cleanup in dallas experts were immediately contacted after a city of Athens staff discovered a significant leak in a sewer line three-quarters of a mile northwest of the intersection of Highway 175 South and Loop 7.

“In terms of severity, this was the largest sewer leak we have seen this year,” said Managing Director of Public Services Ryan Adams. “Unfortunately, the leak occurred right next to Coon Creek and the leaking wastewater was discharging into the creek.”

The Athens Police Department (APD) faithfully serves the citizens of Athens on a daily basis. Thanks to a recent agreement with the Athens Independent School District (AISD), APD will soon take over law enforcement responsibility on all AISD campuses. For years, Athens ISD has maintained and operated their own police department. In an effort to focus more on educating the students, the District recently presented the City of Athens with a proposal seeking to transfer campus safety and security responsibilities to the Police Department as part of a School Resource Officer (SRO) program.

“Athens ISD approached the City with the idea of the Athens Police Department providing law enforcement services to the District through a SRO program,” said Athens Police Chief Buddy Hill. “The District said they wanted to get out of the law enforcement business so that they could focus on the education business.”

Approved by the Athens City Council in April, work is now complete on system-wide improvements to the City’s Emergency Outdoor Warning System. Through the competitive bidding process, the City selected Federal Signal Corporation to update the City’s aged warning system with the objective of providing reliable and effective emergency notification to citizens.

The City’s previous system had four notification stations that were over two decades old. Due to their age, these systems consistently failed or were in need of costly repairs in order to function. Contracted at $173,634, Federal Signal Corporation’s proposal provided a savings to the City of $54,366 by preserving three existing poles and siren mounts, which are in compliance and were first installed in 2011. All other emergency notification stations received new sirens, hardware, poles, and mounts.
