Veterans Day is Wednesday, and Athens ISD has been at the center of veteran awareness since posting the viral video “Zoey’s Reunion” to their Facebook page on Friday. With more than 20,000 views and counting as of Monday, the video (a surprise reunion between a kindergartner and her sailor father during an assembly) has touched the hearts of people far outside Henderson County.
“It was a lovely moment, and we were honored by the Barr family for the opportunity to witness it,” said Toni Garrard Clay, AISD communications specialist. “It also came at a perfect time, being only a few days ahead of Veterans Day.”
Trinity Valley Community College’s Iota Alpha chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the national honor society for two-year colleges, inducted 52 members in a ceremony held Sunday, October 25 in the Student Union Building on the Athens Campus.

Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, headquartered in Jackson, Mississippi, is the largest honor society in higher education with 1,275 chapters on college campuses in all 50 of the United States, Canada, Germany, the Republic of Palau, Peru, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the British Virgin Islands, the United Arab Emirates, and U.S. territorial possessions. More than 3 million students have been inducted since its founding in 1918, with approximately 134,000 students inducted annually.
Cross Roads Elementary will host a Scholastic Book Fair Monday, Nov. 9 through Friday, Nov. 13 from 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. Funds raised will help purchase books for the Elementary – Junior High Library. Families, faculty, and the community are invited to attend this fun reading event that helps inspire children to become lifelong readers.
The Book Fair will feature a day for Breakfast or Lunch with a Loved One on Nov. 11 from 7:15 a.m. to 8 a.m. for breakfast or 10:45 a.m. to noon for lunch (at your student’s lunch time).
There will also be a Veterans Day Program on that day.
