It’s a three-peat! For the third year in a row — and the second by the same team — the Athens High School debate team claimed the UIL District 4A state title in CX (cross-examination) debate. The tournament started in Austin this past Friday with 60 teams. Saturday night, some eight rounds later, the team of Matthew Hernandez and True Head (or HH, as they are known to their teammates) was triumphant. All but one round were unanimous decisions for Athens.
“[The victory] felt more accomplished this year,” said Head.
South Athens Elementary School is on a mission to prove that math and science is not only important but can be a lot of fun for students and their families. Seeing and doing is believing. So the campus is hosting Math and Science Night this Thursday, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. for all South Athens students and their family members. The come-and-go event is free.
“This is an opportunity for families to engage in math and science fun,” explained event organizer Elaine Nelson, a math and science intervention teacher at the school. There will be a great deal of hands-on activities. We want families engaged and talking about math and science.”
Monday night, Athens Independent School District officials and Athens City Council members debated closing Dul Averiett between Owen and Royall streets.
Superintendent Blake Stiles said the district was asking for the street to be closed for safety reasons and to help with the refurbishing of Bruce Field.
“Dul Averiett is a highway right in the middle of a school zone, and we have kids that walk across that street all day long from class to class,” AISD Superintendent Blake Stiles said. “And at night time, if you have ball games or events, it’s a circus.”
The Athens girls powerlifting team competed in the regional championship Saturday in Fairfield, qualifying six girls in six different weight classes, including one for the state meet and another as alternate. The team placed seventh out of 27.
