Bel Air Elementary School fifth-graders participated in a science fair Thursday, May 26. Shelby Dorsey (left) won first place with his investigation of how pH levels relate to the sourness of candy. Nevaeh Salinas (center) won second with a look at how quickly different brands of crayons melt in comparison to one another. Caleb Herrera (right) won third place by answering the question, “What makes the different kinds of balls travel different distances when the same amount of force is applied?” Allison McCain, Jared Duran and Holden Disotell also earned honorable mentions. Portion of Dul Averiett to close Monday, June 6

On the morning of Monday, June 6, the City of Athens will permanently close a one-block section of Dul Averiett Street between Royal and Owen streets, adjacent to the east end of Bruce Field. The closing makes way for future construction at Bruce Field as it is expanded to include several new bathrooms and a concession stand, in addition to new football and soccer field houses. The Athens City Council in March unanimously voted to close the portion of Dul Averiett following a lengthy public forum.

The Athens Classroom Teachers Association recently honored a number of AISD’s retiring or recently retired personnel. Athens Noon Kiwanis Club recognizes AHS students and teachers

Athens High School students and teachers were recognized Tuesday by the Athens Noon Kiwanis Club. (From left) Julie Kelley received the Kiwanis/TVCC Partnership Scholarship, totalling $1,500; Cindy Garcia received the AHS Key Club Scholarship worth $500; and club members honored AHS teachers Janet Green and Stephanie Shelton for their sponsorship of the Key Club, a student service organization which grew under their leadership from practically no members to the current 75. Two AHS athletes sign with colleges

Destiny Carter and Chad Walker both signed on Monday to play collegiate sports. Carter signed to play soccer at Paul Quinn College in Dallas, and Walker signed with Southwestern Assemblies of God University in Waxahachie to play football.
