AHS seniors register to vote
At the end of Friday’s first senior class meeting at Athens High School, students who are at least 17 years and 10 months old were given the opportunity to register to vote. Twenty registered, and 27 signed up to learn more about working at an election site (which requires that an individual to be at least 16). It was great to see young democracy in action. Open auditions for fall musical at HCPAC
The music of Irving Berlin, showcased in “I Love a Piano,” will be the fall musical at HCPAC this year. Auditions will be held for singers, musicians, actors and dancers Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 22 and 23 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. in the Main Stage Auditorium.
“I Love a Piano” is the celebration of the music and lyrics of Irving Berlin. It follows the journey of a piano as it moves in and out of American lives from the turn of the century to the present. Along the way, the story comes to vibrant life with over sixty of Irving Berlin’s most beloved songs, including classics such as ‘Blue Skies,’ ‘There’s No Business Like Show Business,’ ‘Puttin’ on the Ritz,’ ‘Cheek to Cheek,’ ‘Always,’ ‘How Deep is the Ocean,’ ‘Anything You Can Do,’ ‘God Bless America,’ and, of course, ‘I Love a Piano.’ Alternately heartbreaking and hilarious, rousing and reflective, “I Love a Piano” is a fitting tribute to the man Jerome Kern famously said had ‘no place in American music – he is American music.’
Auditions are for women and men aged 18 and older. There is no experience or preparation necessary. Show dates are Oct. 13 – 22.
HCPAC is a non-profit 502(c)(3) located at 400 Gibson Rd., Athens, TX. For more information call 903-675-3908.
Athens ISD meets STAAR standard
By Toni Garrard Clay/AISD Communications Coordinator
Once again, all campuses at Athens ISD have “met standard,” as determined by the preliminary results from the 2016 Texas Education Agency accountability ratings — also known as STAAR.
“I”m pleased with these results and anxious to see how many distinctions we receive in September (when more detailed official results are released). I expect we’ll do well,” said AISD Superintendent Blake Stiles.
