More than 100 videos were entered in the contest, sponsored by the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB). TASB Vice-President Andra Self of Lufkin ISD made the presentation to campus representatives at a recent school board meeting.

“With so many excellent entries, the final choices were extremely difficult. We are thrilled that students from all over the state showcased their creativity and enthusiasm for the great things going on in their schools. DAR press release

Each year the Sarah Maples Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution presents a scholarship to a student in the Tri-County area. The process of choosing a student is long and drawn out. It goes through at least two panels of Sarah Maples members and it is so hard to choose because we would like to give one to each student.

This year the members chose Hannah Thai. Hannah is the valedictorian of the Mabank High School Class of 2013. She is the daughter of Kenny and Sim Thai. She has one sister, Eileen, who graduated from Mabank High School in 2011 and currently attends Baylor University.

Hannah has been involved in Pre-AP and AP classes during her whole high school career and has maintained a 106.328 grade point average. Hannah serves as president of the Mabank High School Beta Club, copy editor of the Mabank High School Yearbook Staff, and president of her senior class. She is also a member of the Mabank UIL Journalism team. This is her second consecutive Continue reading “DAR presents scholarship to Thai”

District Attorney’s Office press release

For the second year in a row, Henderson County District Attorney Scott McKee stood in front of almost 200 Henderson County fourth graders from Eustace, Malakoff and LaPoynor ISDs and asked them for their help. McKee told the students that as an Army soldier, he and every other soldier has a battle buddy to look after them.

“I need each of you to promise me that you will look out for your buddy and tell a teacher, counselor or parent if you think things aren’t going well at home with your friend,” said McKee. McKee also asked them if they would be his soldiers in his war against child abuse. They all responded with a resounding “Yes, sir!”

The 2nd annual Kids Day was the capstone event to the month-long Go Blue campaign. The campaign begins in early April with a proclamation by Commissioners’ Court and culminates with the big day. Throughout the month, the Henderson Continue reading “County kids celebrate after post contest”

Henderson County Now

I was so excited that I got the chance to sit this week and chat very briefly with my own “little superstars” called the Athens Hornets baseball team and Head Coach Dallas Robertson.

As you all may know already, they are on the road to the regional quarterfinals. Up next is an opponent that happens to be the defending state champions: Pleasant Grove. After coming off an exciting comeback Saturday afternoon in game 3, Athens sent home the Crandall Pirates in a 13-10 area round series win.

The team will be playing at Northeast Texas Community College in Mount Pleasant Friday at 7 p.m. Game 2 is at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Game 3 is 30 minutes after if needed.

I call them my “lil superstars” simply because they are so young, but they are also so talented as they have shown Continue reading “Kendall Sanders visits Athens Hornets on eve of Regional series”
