Athens High School’s Robert Becker delivers on high expectations

If a teacher’s success is decided by the number of students who revere him, Robert Becker is succeeding; if it’s determined by his students’ scores on standardized tests, Robert Becker is succeeding; if it’s determined by the professional accolades he’s received, Robert Becker is succeeding. You get the picture.

Becker teaches multiple math courses to students grades 9 through 12. Athens High School Principal Ginger Morrison calls him one of a kind. “He has amazing talent and is gifted at stretching students beyond their normal academic boundaries,” she said.

Athens Middle School Builders Club officers

Members of Athens Middle School’s Builders Club were inducted during Tuesday’s Kiwanis Club luncheon. The Kiwanis Builders Club is a student-led community service organization. Builders Club is the largest service organization for middle school students, with more than 45,000 members worldwide. State rates Athens ISD finances as ‘superior’

Sometimes the same old news is very good news. And in this case, the story being repeated is that Athens ISD has received very high marks for its financial well-being.

During Monday night’s November school board meeting, Chief Financial Officer Randy Jones reported to the district’s trustees that AISD has again been designated as “superior” by the Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas. The current 2016-17 ratings are based on school year 2015-16 data. On a 100-point scale, the district received a 98.

New Bruce Field draws playoff games, benefits local business

The season may have come to an end for the Hornets, but Bruce Field is still busy — and bringing thousands of people to Athens for football playoff season.

“Anytime we can bring people into our community, it is absolutely positive for the economy,” said Athens Chamber of Commerce Board Chairman Lange Svehlak. “You hope even if they’re only here one time, they fall in love with your community and decide to come back at some point. You never know what can happen when they get a good impression. With the new ballfields and the renovated Bruce Field and the upcoming AHS gym, it’s going to keep growing.”

AHS leader represents Texas in policy debate world

Each year a select group of people in the world of high school policy debate determines a topic to be used by teenagers across the land. Thanks to this process, students in all 50 states tackle a single, carefully worded topic, culminating in a national tournament. This year, there’ a 50-50 chance that essential topic will come from the mind of Athens High School educator Nicole Cornish.

As one school administrator succinctly put it, “This is a big deal.”
