1. The reward offered in the murder of Kaufman County Assistant District Attorney Mark Hasse has increased to six figures.

2. A threat against a Brownsboro High School student caused the school to implement its “shelter-in-place” response plan Monday. 

3. It’s a big night for the Mabank Panthers, who will hit the court in Hallsville to take on Pleasant Grove in Regional Quarterfinal action. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. We’ll be there.

4. The TVCC Lady Cardinals have named Wednesday Hoops for Heart, an event to to raise funds for the East Texas chapter of the Amazing Little Hearts Group.

FIVE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW TODAY

1. The annual Old Fiddlers Reunion has been moved to Saturday this year. 

2. Athens ISD promoted Dr. Janie Sims to assistant superintendent and Winston McCowan to principal of the Middle School.

3. Henderson County high school sports is moving on to softball, baseball and track … except in Mabank, where the Panthers are scheduled to play in the Regional Quarterfinal tomorrow night. The Panthers will take on Pleasant Grove at 7 p.m. in Hallsville. Mabank advanced by beating Wills Point Friday night. 

4. The Athens City Council will convene for its regular meeting 5:30 p.m. tonight. Action setting up the May election is on the agenda, along with a possible $95,500 low-interest loan (3 percent) from the EDC to Lone Star Housing.

5. McAlister’s in Athens will be closed this week for renovations.

FIVE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW TODAY

1. Old Hospital Could Get Facelift: The Athens City Council yesterday heard about plans that could turn the old Henderson County Hospital into an assisted living facility for veterans. 

2. Organically Speaking: Keep Athens Beautiful will be hosting TV news meteorologist Rebecca Miller 6 p.m. tonight at the Cain Center in an event touting the “benefits of living organically.” 

3. Powerlifting Meet: The Athens Hornets powerlifting team will look to improve on last week’s nice showing when they travel to Fairfield tonight.

4. Athens ISD Meeting: The AISD school board will be holding its regular meeting tonight at 6 p.m. with administrator contracts — including cutting one position — on the agenda. 

5. Playoff Teams Getting Ready: The Mabank Panthers are scheduled to take on Wills Point in the Area round of the playoffs tomorrow night. The game will be played at Forney ISD, but according to the MISD website, time is still to be determined. The Brownsboro Bears will take on Texarkana Liberty-Eylau 7 p.m. tomorrow at Pine Tree ISD.

DAILY BRIEF: Motions in Guthrie murder trial set

HOT TOPIC: Pre-trial motions in the Jackie Martez Guthrie murder case were scheduled to begin today in Judge Dan Moore’s 173rd District Court, according to Henderson County judicial records.

The motions were originally scheduled for Jan. 15, but were postponed.

Guthrie is charged in connection with the shooting death of Chantel Barrett, 18.

Barrett was found dead in a Coffee City residence by police on Thursday, July 19, while responding to a call about gunshots. Guthrie, 23, was quickly identified as a suspect and a manhunt was initiated. The suspect was believed to have also kidnapped 19-year-old Tiffany Hurd, who was eight months pregnant with Guthrie’s child at the time.

Guthrie was arrested 24 hours later in Galveston. Hurd was with him in Galveston.

He also faces a charge of theft of a firearm.

At the time of his arrest, Guthrie was already serving probation for burglary of a habitation.
