1. With the Athens Splash Pad Project approaching an important deadline Friday, a reader asked Henderson County Now about the ongoing costs of the project. So we found out.

FIVE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW TODAY

1. Salina bound! The Trinity Valley Community College Lady Cardinals won the Region XIV championship Saturday by beating Blinn, 69-58. The ladies will be in Kansas starting March 18 to go for the repeat. #Chasing7 (TVCC Facebook photo album)

2. There’s another set of local athletes going to compete at the top of their game. Powerlifters Jose Rodriguez and John Arellano, both of Athens, and Brett Butler of Mabank will be competing in the state powerlifting meet in Abilene Saturday, March 23. Here is a list of results from the Regional powerlifting meet.

3. We are just one week out from the Henderson County Livestock Show, one of the biggest events for kids in the county. 

4. The Athens Splash Pad Project is closing in on an important deadline. 

5. The Athens City Council meeting originally scheduled for tonight has been cancelled.

TOP 5 STORIES OF THE WEEK

Story 1 — Splash Pad deadline: The Athens Splash Pad project organizers have raised nearly three-quarters of the needed funds … but must raise an additional $20,000 by next Friday, March 15, in order to build the splash pad this summer.
Why it’s important: Everyone has worked so hard, it would be disheartening if construction doesn’t start for this summer.

Story 2 — TVCC Lady Cardinals still rolling: TVCC was playing Angelina in the Region XIV semifinal while I was writing, but were expected to win and advance to the championship game 3 p.m. Saturday at the Patriot Center, UT Tyler.
Why it’s important: The Lady Cardinals are looking to repeat as national champions.

Story 3 — Former Henderson County sheriff Charlie Fields, Jr. passed away: Fields died March 2.
Why it’s important: He was Sheriff of Henderson County from 1978 until his retirement in 1986. Charlie was a member of First Baptist Church and a lifelong resident of Henderson County.

Story 4 — Brownsboro ISD hires AD/football coach: Jason Hooker was named BISD’s new athletic director and head football coach.
Why it’s important: The leader of the sports program at one of the county’s biggest schools is always important.

1. The Sand Flat Cemetery Association was honored today on the floor of the Texas House of Representatives to commemorate the placement of an Official Texas Historical Marker for Sand Flat Cemetery near Athens.

2. Athens Middle School will host a meet-and-greet from 5:15-6 p.m. for new principal, Winston McCowan. 

3. Trinity Valley Community College basketball fever continues to grow. The Lady Cardinals dominated Tyler in yesterday’s game, 87-47. Today, the men will take on No. 1 seed Kilgore at 1 p.m. I’ll be posting updates on our Facebook page. 

4. Malakoff Middle School is competing in the “Texas Public Schools Rock!” student video contest sponsored by the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) and needs your help. All they need is for you to watch a short, cute video. 

5. Jason Hooker has been named the new AD and head football coach at Brownsboro ISD. (The Statesman)

2. The TVCC men advanced in the Region XIV tournament with a first-round win over Angelina, 84-71. They will take on Kilgore Thursday at 1 p.m. The TVCC women are scheduled for their first tournament game today at 1 p.m. against Tyler. All games are at the Patriot Center on the campus of UT Tyler.

3. Funeral services for former Henderson County Sheriff Charlie Fields, Jr. are today at 1 p.m. 

4. The Athens Kiwanis Club held its annual pancake day yesterday. Here are some photos. 

5. Chris Womble was named Firefighter of the Year.
